The Origins of the Meme
The Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy meme first gained popularity on Tumblr in the months following the premiere of Hamilton on Broadway in 2015. Fans of the show quickly latched onto the three sisters, who are portrayed as strong, independent women with their own unique personalities and storylines. The meme itself typically features an image of the three sisters, with each sister assigned a different role or characteristic based on their portrayal in the musical.
The meme’s origins can be traced back to a scene in the musical where the character of Aaron Burr sings the line “look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now.” Fans on Tumblr began to use this line as a way of expressing their love for the show and the Schuyler sisters in particular.
The Impact of the Meme
The Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy meme quickly spread beyond Tumblr and became a popular reference point in online communities like Twitter, Instagram, and Reddit. Fans began to create their own versions of the meme, with captions and jokes that ranged from silly and lighthearted to poignant and emotional.
The meme also had a significant impact on the popularity of Hamilton itself. While the show was already a hit on Broadway, the meme helped to introduce the musical to a wider audience and created a sense of community and camaraderie among fans of the show.
Why the Meme Continues to Resonate
Despite the fact that Hamilton premiered almost a decade ago, the Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy meme continues to be popular among fans of the show. Part of the reason for this is the enduring popularity of Hamilton itself, which continues to attract new fans and inspire passionate discussions and debates among its fanbase.
Another reason for the meme’s longevity is the enduring appeal of the Schuyler sisters themselves. Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy are all complex, well-drawn characters with their own unique strengths and weaknesses. Fans of the show are drawn to these characters not just because of their roles in the musical, but because they represent a powerful vision of what women can be when given the opportunity to shine.
