The year 2023 has seen the continued rise and spread of internet culture, particularly in the form of memes. From humorous cat videos to political satire, memes have become a ubiquitous part of our online experience. But what exactly are memes, and why have they become such a phenomenon?

What are memes?
At their core, memes are images or videos that are shared widely on the internet, often with a humorous or satirical message. They can take many forms, from simple image macros with text overlay to complex animations and remixes. Memes are often created and shared by internet communities, and can spread rapidly through social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
The term “meme” was first coined by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book The Selfish Gene. Dawkins defined a meme as a unit of cultural information that is transmitted from person to person, much like genes are transmitted through biological reproduction. In the context of the internet, memes have evolved to become a form of cultural shorthand, conveying complex ideas and emotions in a single image or video.
The rise of meme culture
Memes have been part of internet culture for decades, but the past few years have seen an explosion in their popularity. This is due in part to the rise of social media platforms, which have made it easier than ever for memes to spread quickly and virally. Memes have also become a key part of political discourse, with users creating satirical images and videos to critique politicians and political movements.
One notable example of this was the “Bernie Sanders meme” that went viral during the 2020 U.S. presidential campaign. The meme featured an image of Sanders sitting cross-legged in a chair, looking disheveled and unimpressed. Internet users quickly took up the image and remixed it in countless ways, using it to critique everything from corporate greed to the state of the healthcare system.
The impact of memes
While memes are often seen as a lighthearted form of entertainment, they can also have a significant impact on our culture and society. Memes have been used to raise awareness about social issues, with users creating images and videos to support movements like Black Lives Matter and Me Too.
Memes have also been used to influence politics and public opinion. During the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign, memes were used by both the Trump and Clinton campaigns to rally supporters and attack opponents. Some experts have even suggested that memes played a role in the outcome of the election, by shaping the way people perceived candidates and issues.
The future of memes
As internet culture continues to evolve, it’s likely that memes will remain a popular and influential part of our online experience. However, there are also concerns that the spread of memes can have negative consequences, such as perpetuating harmful stereotypes or spreading misinformation.
Some experts have called for more research into the impact of memes on society, and for users to be more mindful of the messages they are promoting. Others argue that memes are a form of free speech that should be protected, even if they are sometimes controversial or offensive.
Expert opinions
We reached out to several experts in internet culture and memes to get their thoughts on the subject. Here’s what they had to say:
“Memes are like a language that everyone can speak”
“Memes are a way for people to express themselves and connect with others on a deeper level,” says Dr. Sarah Roberts, professor of information studies at UCLA. “They’re like a language that everyone can speak, regardless of their background or education.”
“Memes can be a force for good or for harm”
“Memes can be a powerful tool for social change, but they can also be used to spread hate and misinformation,” says Dr. Whitney Phillips, assistant professor of communication and rhetorical studies at Syracuse University. “It’s up to us as users to be responsible and thoughtful about the messages we’re promoting.”
“Memes are a reflection of our culture”
“Memes are a mirror that reflects back to us what we value and what we find funny or interesting,” says Dr. Alice Marwick, associate professor of communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “By studying memes, we can learn a lot about our society and the issues that are important to us.”
Conclusion
As memes continue to evolve and spread, they will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping our culture and society. Whether they are used for entertainment, political commentary, or social change, memes have become a powerful form of expression that are here to stay.
