It’s hard to believe that it’s been ten years since Liverpool’s title hopes were dashed due to one fateful slip by their captain, Steven Gerrard. The incident, which occurred during a match against Chelsea in the 2013/2014 Premier League season, has gone down in history as one of football’s most memorable moments, and has spawned countless memes and jokes online.

What Happened?
For those who may not remember, or who are new to the world of football, let’s recap what happened on that fateful day. Liverpool were in the thick of a title race with Manchester City, and needed to win all of their remaining matches to have a chance at lifting the trophy. They faced Chelsea at home, and were leading 0-1 thanks to a goal from Demba Ba.
With just a few minutes left on the clock, Gerrard received a routine pass from a teammate, but as he went to control the ball, he slipped and lost his footing. Ba pounced on the loose ball, raced towards Liverpool’s goal, and slotted it past the keeper to make it 0-2. Liverpool went on to lose the match 0-2, and eventually finished second to Manchester City in the league.
The Memes
As soon as the final whistle blew, fans and pundits alike began to joke about Gerrard’s slip. The incident was quickly turned into a meme, with countless photoshopped images and videos appearing online. Some of the most popular memes include:
- A picture of Gerrard slipping on a banana peel, with the caption “Steven Gerrard in training”
- A video of Gerrard slipping set to the tune of “Yakety Sax”, the theme from the Benny Hill Show
- A picture of Gerrard with the caption “Gerrard’s slip was just a cover-up for the fact that he’s actually a secret agent for Manchester City”
The Backlash
While the memes were certainly funny, not everyone found them amusing. Gerrard himself has spoken out about the incident, saying that it was the lowest point of his career. He’s also said that the memes and jokes were hurtful, and made him feel like a “laughing stock”.
Other Liverpool players and fans were also unhappy with the way the incident was treated. Many felt that it was unfair to single out Gerrard for one mistake, when he had been such an important player for the club for so many years. Some even accused the media of deliberately trying to humiliate Gerrard and Liverpool.
Looking Back
Now that ten years have passed, it’s interesting to look back at the incident and see how it’s been remembered. While the memes and jokes are still popular online, there’s also a sense of respect for Gerrard and what he achieved during his career. He’s widely regarded as one of Liverpool’s greatest ever players, and his slip is seen as just one small moment in an otherwise incredible career.
As for Liverpool, they’ve gone on to win the Premier League since that fateful day in 2014, and have established themselves as one of the best teams in the world. While they’ll always remember Gerrard’s slip, it’s unlikely to define them in the way that it once did.
