The Origins of the Meme
The “guy in bathroom” meme first appeared on the internet in 2018. The original image was taken by a photographer named Jonathan Knowles, who had been hired by a company to take stock photos. The man in the photo was actually a model who had been hired for the shoot. The image was later uploaded to stock photo websites, where it was discovered by meme creators.
At first, the meme was used in a relatively straightforward way. It was often used to express frustration or disappointment, with captions like “When you realize it’s Monday tomorrow” or “When you’re stuck in traffic and have to pee.”
The Meme Goes Viral
As the meme gained popularity, it began to be used in more creative ways. People started using it to express a wide range of emotions, from sadness to joy. The meme even started to be used in political contexts, with captions like “When you realize you voted for the wrong candidate.”
The meme also started to become more self-aware. People began to create memes that were meta-commentaries on the meme itself. For example, there were memes that showed the “guy in bathroom” meme being used in different contexts, with captions like “When you see the guy in bathroom meme being used in a completely unrelated context.”
The Meme Becomes Controversial
As with many memes, the “guy in bathroom” meme eventually became controversial. Some people felt that the meme was overused and that it had lost its original meaning. Others felt that the meme was offensive, as it often depicted men in a negative light.
Despite these criticisms, the meme continued to be popular. In fact, it spawned a number of spin-off memes, including the “girl in bathroom” meme and the “dog in bathroom” meme.
