The year 2020 will always be remembered for the COVID-19 pandemic that shook the world, leaving millions of people affected by the virus and countless others grappling with the economic fallout of widespread lockdowns and job losses. During the early days of the pandemic, a strange phenomenon took hold of social media: the money toilet paper meme.

What is the Money Toilet Paper Meme?

The money toilet paper meme is a digital image that shows a roll of toilet paper with dollar bills printed on it, as if the toilet paper itself were made of money. The meme gained popularity as people began hoarding toilet paper in response to the pandemic, and as the economic impact of the virus became more apparent.

Many people saw the meme as a humorous way of dealing with the anxiety and uncertainty of the moment. Others saw it as a reflection of the deep-seated financial anxiety that many people were feeling, as they watched their retirement savings shrink and their job prospects dwindle.

The Psychology of Financial Anxiety

Financial anxiety is a real and pervasive phenomenon, especially in times of economic uncertainty like the one we are currently facing. People who experience financial anxiety may feel overwhelmed by the prospect of managing their money, worried about their ability to provide for themselves and their families, and paralyzed by the fear of making the wrong financial decisions.

According to a survey conducted by the American Psychological Association, money is the top source of stress for Americans, with 72 percent of respondents reporting feeling stressed about money at least some of the time. The survey also found that financial stress is linked to a range of negative outcomes, including poor physical and mental health, strained relationships, and decreased job performance.

The Response to the Money Toilet Paper Meme

The money toilet paper meme elicited a range of responses from people who saw it. Some people found it funny and clever, and shared it with their friends and followers on social media. Others found it insensitive and tone-deaf, arguing that it trivialized the very real financial struggles that many people were facing.

One Twitter user wrote, “I’m sorry, but I can’t laugh at the money toilet paper meme. It’s not funny to joke about losing your job, not being able to pay your bills, or worrying about how you’re going to put food on the table for your family.”

Another user responded, “I understand where you’re coming from, but for me, the money toilet paper meme is a way of coping with the anxiety and stress of the moment. It’s a reminder that we’re all in this together, and that we can find humor even in the darkest of times.”

The Lessons of the Money Toilet Paper Meme

Whether you find the money toilet paper meme funny or offensive, it offers some important lessons about the role of humor and social media in times of crisis. First, it highlights the deep-seated financial anxiety that many people are experiencing right now, and the need for more support and resources to help people manage their money and navigate the economic fallout of the pandemic.

Second, it underscores the power of humor and levity in difficult times. While it’s important to take the economic impact of the pandemic seriously, it’s also important to find ways to relieve stress and anxiety, and to connect with others who are going through similar struggles.

The Future of the Money Toilet Paper Meme

As we move forward into a post-pandemic world, it’s unclear whether the money toilet paper meme will continue to be a cultural touchstone or fade into obscurity. What is clear, however, is that the financial anxiety and uncertainty that it represents will continue to be a major issue for many people, and that we need to find ways to address it head-on.

Whether through more financial education and resources, better social safety nets, or simply more compassionate and empathetic conversations about money, we can all play a role in helping to alleviate the financial anxiety that so many people are feeling right now.
