thoroughbreds

It’s been almost a decade since the infamous 52 Thoroughbreds meme first surfaced on the internet. The meme, which features a photo of 52 racehorses crammed into a starting gate, quickly went viral and became a cultural phenomenon. But what exactly is the story behind this meme? And why has it endured for so long?

The Origins of the Meme

The original photo that inspired the meme was taken in 2009 at the Aqueduct Racetrack in New York. It shows 52 horses squeezed into the starting gate, waiting for the race to begin. The photo was taken by Adam Coglianese, a photographer for the New York Racing Association.

At the time, the photo wasn’t particularly remarkable. It was just another day at the races. But a few years later, someone stumbled upon the photo and decided to turn it into a meme. They added the caption “When you order too many horses online” and shared it on social media.

The Spread of the Meme

Once the meme was unleashed on the internet, it quickly spread like wildfire. It was shared on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and soon became a staple of internet culture. People started creating their own versions of the meme, adding their own captions and twists.

One popular variation of the meme features the starting gate with a seemingly endless number of horses crammed inside. Another variation shows the horses bursting out of the gate and running amok. The possibilities were endless, and people continued to find new ways to riff on the original photo.

The Legacy of the Meme

So why has the 52 Thoroughbreds meme endured for so long? Part of the answer lies in its sheer absurdity. The idea of 52 horses being crammed into a starting gate is patently ridiculous, and yet it’s also strangely compelling. It’s the kind of thing that sticks with you long after you’ve seen it.

Another reason for the meme’s longevity is its versatility. The basic image of the starting gate can be used in a wide range of contexts, from political satire to pop culture references. The meme has been used to comment on everything from the 2016 presidential election to the final season of Game of Thrones.

Many people who are familiar with the 52 Thoroughbreds meme have strong opinions about it. Some see it as a hilarious commentary on the absurdities of modern life, while others see it as a pointless waste of time.

One commenter on Reddit wrote, “I don’t know why, but this meme just cracks me up every time. It’s so stupid, but it never gets old.” Another commenter on Twitter said, “I absolutely hate this meme. It’s not funny and it’s been done to death.”

Love it or hate it, there’s no denying that the 52 Thoroughbreds meme has left an indelible mark on internet culture. Whether it will continue to endure for another decade remains to be seen, but for now, it’s still going strong.
