In the early 2010s, Magic: The Gathering players were introduced to a powerful planeswalker card named Jace the Mind Sculptor. This blue and colorless card quickly became a staple in many competitive decks, with its ability to manipulate the opponent’s hand and board state. But over time, a different kind of Jace the Mind Sculptor began to emerge – one that was less concerned with winning games and more focused on making players laugh. This Jace the Mind Sculptor was a meme, and it took the Magic community by storm.

How the Jace the Mind Sculptor Meme Started

The origins of the Jace the Mind Sculptor meme are a bit murky, but it’s believed to have started on the Magic: The Gathering subreddit sometime around 2012. The meme involves taking various images and photoshopping Jace the Mind Sculptor’s face onto them, along with a humorous caption. One of the earliest examples of the Jace meme involved a picture of a cat, with Jace’s face superimposed over the cat’s head. The caption read “I am a cat, but I’m also a planeswalker. Deal with it.” This post quickly gained traction on the subreddit, with many users commenting and sharing their own Jace memes.
