In late 2023, Red Dead Redemption 2 was finally released on PC much to the delight of fans who had been eagerly waiting for it. However, one particular moment from the game went viral and sparked a series of hilarious memes across the internet. Let’s take a look at what happened and why it became so popular.
The Moment
During a mission in Red Dead Redemption 2, the player is tasked with rescuing a group of hostages from a gang hideout. As you approach the hideout, one of the hostages, a woman named Meredith, breaks free and starts running towards you. However, as she gets closer, she trips and falls face-first into the ground. The player can then choose to either help her up or ignore her and continue on with the mission.
It may seem like a minor moment, but it quickly became the subject of countless memes and jokes on social media.
The Memes
People started taking screenshots of the moment and adding captions or editing the image to make it even funnier. Some of the most popular memes included:
“When you’re running late for work but you forget something inside”
This one showed Meredith falling with the caption “Me leaving my apartment after forgetting my phone charger.”
“When you’re trying to be sneaky but you accidentally step on a twig”
Another popular meme showed Meredith falling with the caption “Me trying to be stealthy in a video game.”
The Reaction
As the memes started spreading across social media, people who had played the game started chiming in with their own thoughts on the moment. Some found it hilarious and said it was one of the best parts of the game. Others felt bad for Meredith and wished they could have done more to help her up.
Rockstar, the company behind Red Dead Redemption 2, even got in on the joke. They tweeted out a screenshot of Meredith falling with the caption “When you’re so excited for Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC that you trip and fall.”
The Legacy
While the hype around Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC eventually died down, the Meredith meme lives on. It’s still a popular reference on social media and has even spawned merchandise like t-shirts and coffee mugs.
Overall, the Meredith moment is a reminder of how a small, seemingly insignificant part of a game can become a viral sensation. It’s also a testament to the creativity and humor of gamers and internet culture at large.
