recap

If you haven’t watched Ozark yet, you’re missing out on one of the most thrilling crime dramas on television. The show premiered on Netflix in 2017 and quickly became a fan favorite. Set in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, the series follows the lives of the Byrde family, who get caught up in a dangerous world of money laundering and drug trafficking.

The Plot

Marty Byrde (played by Jason Bateman) is a financial advisor who gets involved in a money laundering scheme with a drug cartel. When the scheme goes awry, Marty is forced to move his family from the Chicago suburbs to the Ozarks to continue laundering money for the cartel.

Along with his wife Wendy (played by Laura Linney), Marty must navigate the dangerous world of drug trafficking and keep his family safe while also trying to build a new life in the Ozarks. Complicating matters is the fact that the Byrdes’ teenage daughter Charlotte (played by Sofia Hublitz) and younger son Jonah (played by Skylar Gaertner) are struggling to adjust to their new surroundings.

The Characters

One of the strengths of Ozark is its complex and well-developed characters. Jason Bateman’s Marty Byrde is a fascinating protagonist, a man who is both ruthless and vulnerable as he tries to protect his family and stay one step ahead of the cartel.

Laura Linney’s Wendy Byrde is equally compelling, a woman who is just as capable of making tough decisions as her husband. Sofia Hublitz and Skylar Gaertner are also excellent as the Byrde children, who are forced to grow up quickly in the face of danger.

The Villains

No crime drama is complete without a good villain, and Ozark has several of them. Chief among them is the drug cartel that Marty and Wendy get involved with, led by the ruthless Snells and the enigmatic lawyer Helen Pierce (played by Janet McTeer).

Another standout villain is FBI agent Roy Petty (played by Jason Butler Harner), who is determined to take down the Byrdes and the cartel. His cat-and-mouse game with Marty is one of the highlights of the season.

The Reception

Ozark was a critical and commercial success when it premiered in 2017. It was praised for its strong performances, compelling characters, and tense storytelling. The show has since been renewed for three more seasons, with the final season set to air in 2022.

People who have watched the show have praised it for its gripping plot and strong performances. One Twitter user said, “Just finished Ozark and WOW. What a ride. The acting, writing, and direction are all top-notch.” Another viewer called it “one of the best shows on Netflix.”

Ozark is a must-watch for fans of crime dramas. Its tense storytelling, complex characters, and gripping plot make it one of the best shows on television. If you haven’t watched it yet, now is the perfect time to catch up before the final season airs in 2022.
