plane

In 2023, Burger King launched a marketing campaign that stirred up controversy and conversation in the social media sphere. The fast food chain painted one of their planes with the image of a popular meme, sparking debates on whether this was a genius move or a tasteless one.

The Meme

The meme in question was a screenshot of a tweet from 2017 that said, “I forced a bot to watch over 1,000 hours of Olive Garden commercials and then asked it to write a script for a new Olive Garden commercial of its own. Here is the first page.” The bot’s hilarious and nonsensical script became an instant hit on Twitter and spawned numerous spin-off memes.

Burger King capitalized on the popularity of the meme by painting the tweet’s image on the side of one of their planes, along with the words “The Whopper’s out of the bag.” The plane flew over major cities in the United States, causing a stir among onlookers and social media users.

The Reactions

The Burger King meme plane received mixed reactions from the public. Some praised the fast food chain for their bold and innovative marketing strategy, while others criticized them for making light of a viral tweet that had nothing to do with their brand.

One Twitter user said, “I can’t decide if this is genius or cringey. Either way, Burger King is getting a lot of attention for it.” Another commented, “This is so ridiculous, but I can’t stop laughing. Well played, Burger King.”

However, others were not amused. A viral tweet from a user named @notolivegarden read, “Burger King, please leave our meme alone. We don’t want your burgers or your marketing ploys.” Others accused Burger King of trying too hard to be “hip” and “relevant.”

The Marketing Strategy

Burger King’s meme plane was just one part of a larger marketing campaign that aimed to appeal to younger consumers. The fast food chain has been known for their edgy and irreverent marketing tactics, such as their “Whopper Detour” campaign that encouraged customers to download their app by offering a one-cent Whopper if they ordered from a McDonald’s location.

While some have criticized these tactics as attention-seeking and crass, others have praised them for their effectiveness. Burger King has seen a boost in sales and brand awareness in recent years, thanks in part to their controversial marketing strategies.

The Future of Marketing

The Burger King meme plane is just one example of how companies are using memes and social media trends to market their products. As younger generations become increasingly plugged in to social media, companies are finding new ways to reach them through these channels.

However, the line between clever and tasteless is a fine one, and companies must be careful not to offend or alienate their target audience. The future of marketing will likely see a continued emphasis on social media and viral trends, but companies must find a way to do so without sacrificing their brand identity or integrity.

Final Thoughts

Whether you loved it or hated it, the Burger King meme plane certainly got people talking. While it remains to be seen whether this marketing strategy will ultimately be successful for the fast food chain, it is clear that companies are willing to take risks and push boundaries in order to stay relevant.
