It’s been almost a decade since the Tamil talk show Neeya Naana aired an episode titled “Who is more beautiful: Kerala Girls or Tamil Girls?” Little did anyone know that this episode would become the catalyst for one of the most popular memes in India in 2023 – the Neeya Naana Helicopter Meme.
For those who are unfamiliar, the meme originated from a segment in the aforementioned episode where a participant claimed that Kerala girls are more beautiful because they are “like helicopters.” The statement became a running joke on social media, with people creating memes and videos around it.
The Birth of the Meme
The Neeya Naana Helicopter Meme first gained traction on Twitter in 2021, when a user created a meme featuring a helicopter with the caption “Kerala Girl’s Father.” The post went viral, and soon after, people started creating their own versions of the meme.
One of the reasons why the meme gained so much popularity was because of the absurdity of the statement itself. The idea that someone could compare a group of people to a helicopter was so bizarre that it became funny.
The Impact of the Meme
As the meme continued to gain popularity, it started to influence popular culture in India. Celebrities and influencers started sharing their own versions of the meme, and it quickly became a part of everyday conversation.
Even brands couldn’t resist the allure of the Neeya Naana Helicopter Meme. In 2022, a popular Indian airline used the meme in one of their advertisements, which only added to its popularity.
The Response to the Meme
While the Neeya Naana Helicopter Meme has been widely embraced by the public, it has also faced criticism from some quarters. Some people have argued that the meme is offensive and perpetuates misogynistic stereotypes.
However, others have defended the meme, claiming that it is harmless and meant to be taken in jest. They argue that the meme is not meant to be taken seriously and that people should be able to enjoy it without fear of offending anyone.
The Future of the Meme
It’s hard to say what the future holds for the Neeya Naana Helicopter Meme. Some people believe that it has already peaked and that its popularity will wane in the coming years. Others think that it will continue to be a part of popular culture for years to come.
One thing is for sure, though – the Neeya Naana Helicopter Meme has left a lasting impact on Indian culture. It has become a part of the lexicon, and it’s hard to imagine a time when people won’t be making jokes about helicopters and Kerala girls.
