It’s hard to believe that it’s been over six years since Undertale was released, and yet the game’s impact on internet culture is still being felt today. One of the most enduring memes to come out of Undertale is undoubtedly the Mettaton meme, which has spawned countless images, videos, and remixes over the years. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the history of the Mettaton meme and explore why it’s still so popular in 2023.
Who is Mettaton?
Before we dive into the world of Mettaton memes, let’s first take a moment to introduce the character himself. Mettaton is a robot created by the game’s main antagonist, Dr. Alphys. He serves as the host of the game show “Mettaton’s Quiz Show” and later becomes a boss battle in the game’s Genocide Route. Mettaton’s flamboyant personality, over-the-top design, and memorable catchphrases have made him a fan favorite among Undertale fans.
The Birth of the Mettaton Meme
The Mettaton meme first started to gain traction in the months following Undertale’s release in 2015. Fans of the game were quick to create images of Mettaton in various poses and situations, often accompanied by humorous captions or dialogue. One of the earliest examples of the Mettaton meme was an image of the character striking a dramatic pose with the caption “I am the star!”
The Mettaton meme quickly spread across social media platforms like Tumblr, Twitter, and Reddit, with new versions of the meme appearing every day. Some of the most popular iterations of the Mettaton meme include images of the character in various outfits, such as a maid or a cheerleader, as well as remixes of his iconic catchphrases like “Oh, yes!” and “Fabulous!”
The Evolution of the Mettaton Meme
As the years went on, the Mettaton meme continued to evolve and adapt to new trends and formats. In 2017, a new version of the meme emerged featuring Mettaton in a “distracted boyfriend” scenario, where the character is shown looking at someone else while his partner looks on in disbelief. This version of the meme proved to be incredibly popular and was shared widely across social media.
Other variations of the Mettaton meme have included crossover memes with other popular franchises, such as Spongebob Squarepants and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. The character’s flamboyant design and larger-than-life personality have made him a perfect target for meme creators looking to inject humor into their favorite franchises.
The Legacy of the Mettaton Meme
So why has the Mettaton meme endured for so long? Part of the answer lies in the character’s enduring popularity among Undertale fans. Even six years after the game’s release, Mettaton remains one of the most beloved characters in the franchise, thanks in no small part to his memorable performance by voice actor Eric Stuart.
Another factor in the Mettaton meme’s longevity is its versatility.
