Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also known as AMLO, is the current president of Mexico. Since taking office in 2018, he has become a popular figure on social media, particularly as the subject of memes. These memes range from hilarious to politically charged, and they have become a staple of internet culture in Mexico and beyond.

The Origin of AMLO Memes

The first AMLO memes began to appear in 2018, shortly after he was elected president. At first, they were relatively harmless, poking fun at his unconventional style and tendency to speak his mind. However, as time went on, the memes became more political in nature, with many focusing on his policies and decisions as president.

One of the most famous AMLO memes features a photo of him holding a wad of cash, with the caption “Me canso ganso” (“I’m tired, goose”). This phrase became a catchphrase for AMLO, and it has been used in countless memes since then.

The Different Types of AMLO Memes

Political Memes

Political AMLO memes tend to focus on his policies and decisions as president. They often criticize him for his handling of issues such as crime, corruption, and the economy. Some of these memes are created by opposition groups, while others are made by ordinary citizens who are frustrated with the government.

For example, one popular meme features a photo of AMLO with the caption “Yo sólo vine por el cambio” (“I only came for the change”). The joke is that AMLO promised to bring about change in Mexico, but many people feel that he has not lived up to his promises.

Silly Memes

Not all AMLO memes are political in nature. Some are just plain silly, featuring AMLO in absurd situations or making funny faces. These memes are often created just for the sake of humor, and they can be a lighthearted way to poke fun at the president.

For example, one popular meme features a photo of AMLO with a Photoshopped sombrero and mustache, with the caption “Hola, soy Juan López” (“Hello, I’m Juan López”). The joke is that AMLO looks like a stereotypical Mexican, but his name is actually Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Cultural References

Some AMLO memes make cultural references that only Mexicans will understand. These memes can be a way for Mexicans to bond over their shared experiences and sense of humor.

For example, one popular meme features a photo of AMLO with the caption “No hay mal que por bien no venga” (“Every cloud has a silver lining”). This phrase is a common saying in Mexico, and the meme plays off of AMLO’s tendency to use clichés and proverbs in his speeches.

The Impact of AMLO Memes

AMLO memes have become a powerful tool for political commentary and social critique in Mexico. They allow citizens to express their opinions and frustrations in a way that is both humorous and impactful.

Many people believe that AMLO memes played a role in his landslide victory in the 2018 presidential election. By making him a cultural icon, the memes helped to create a sense of excitement and momentum around his campaign.

However, not everyone is a fan of AMLO memes. Some people feel that they are disrespectful and undermine the authority of the president. Others worry that they contribute to a culture of negativity and cynicism in Mexico.

The Future of AMLO Memes

It’s unclear what the future holds for AMLO memes. Some people believe that they will continue to be a powerful force for political and social change in Mexico. Others worry that they will become stale and lose their impact over time.

Regardless of what happens, it’s clear that AMLO memes have become an important part of internet culture in Mexico. They allow people to express their opinions and frustrations in a way that is both creative and impactful, and they have helped to create a sense of unity and shared experience among Mexicans.
