kutcher

It’s been nearly a decade since actor Ashton Kutcher delivered one of the most iconic burns in internet history. The moment happened on stage at the 2013 Teen Choice Awards, when Kutcher took home the Ultimate Choice Award and used his acceptance speech to offer some advice to the next generation. “I believe that opportunity looks a lot like hard work,” he said. “When I was 13, I had my first job with my dad carrying shingles up to the roof, and then I got a job washing dishes at a restaurant, and then I got a job in a grocery store deli, and then I got a job in a factory sweeping Cheerio dust off the ground.”

At this point, the audience was probably expecting some inspirational words about following your dreams and never giving up. But instead, Kutcher delivered a surprising twist. “And I’ve never had a job in my life that I was better than,” he continued. “I was always just lucky to have a job. And every job I had was a stepping stone to my next job, and I never quit my job until I had my next job. And so, opportunities look a lot like work.”

The Birth of a Meme

Kutcher’s words were met with an awkward silence from the audience, who were clearly not expecting such a blunt answer. But it wasn’t until a few days later that the moment truly went viral. A Tumblr user named Emily Wood shared a screenshot of Kutcher’s speech with the caption “Shut up, Ashton,” and suddenly the internet had a new meme.

Over the next few months, the “Shut up, Ashton” meme spread like wildfire. People used it to mock everything from their own failures to celebrities who seemed out of touch with reality. It became a shorthand for dismissing someone who was being self-righteous or condescending, and it spawned countless variations and parodies.

The Aftermath

For Kutcher, the meme was a bit of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it brought him a lot of attention and made him seem more relatable to younger audiences. On the other hand, it also cemented his reputation as a bit of a goofball, which may not have been the image he was hoping to cultivate.

Over the years, Kutcher has mostly shrugged off the meme and even made fun of himself for it on occasion. But it’s clear that the moment has had a lasting impact on his career and his public persona.

What People Are Saying Now

So, what do people think of the Ashton Kutcher burn meme in 2023? Well, opinions are mixed. Some people still find it hilarious and use it regularly in their online conversations. Others think it’s played out and overused, and wish people would move on to something new.

One Twitter user, @jennifermorris, wrote, “I still can’t hear the name Ashton Kutcher without thinking of that meme. It’s like he’s permanently branded with it.” Another user, @thomasjackson, responded, “Honestly, it’s a little unfair. The guy was just trying to give some advice, and he got roasted for it. We should cut him some slack.”

Conclusion

Love it or hate it, the Ashton Kutcher burn meme is a part of internet history. It’s a reminder that even the most well-intentioned speeches can go awry, and that sometimes the best thing you can do is just laugh at yourself. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of Kutcher or you can’t stand the sight of him, there’s no denying that he gave us one of the most memorable moments in pop culture history.
