In 2023, it’s hard to imagine a time when memes weren’t a ubiquitous part of our online culture. From the early days of Lolcats and Rickrolling to more recent phenomena like the Distracted Boyfriend and “This Is Fine” dog, memes have become a way for people to express themselves and connect with others online. One such meme that had a brief moment in the spotlight was the 5 Knuckle Shuffle meme.

What is the 5 Knuckle Shuffle Meme?

The 5 Knuckle Shuffle meme originated on the internet forum 4chan in the mid-2000s. It features a photograph of a man with a smug expression on his face, captioned with the phrase “I just gave myself the 5 knuckle shuffle.” The phrase is a euphemism for masturbation, and the meme quickly caught on among 4chan users and other online communities.

At its height, the 5 Knuckle Shuffle meme was used as a way to express satisfaction or pride in oneself, often in a sarcastic or self-deprecating way. For example, someone might post the meme with the caption “Just aced my final exam, thanks to the power of the 5 knuckle shuffle.” It was also used as a way to mock or tease others, with captions like “Looks like someone needs to give themselves the 5 knuckle shuffle” accompanying a photo of someone looking sad or defeated.

Why Did the 5 Knuckle Shuffle Meme Fall Out of Favor?

Like most memes, the 5 Knuckle Shuffle had a relatively short lifespan. It was popular for a few years in the mid-2010s, but gradually fell out of favor as newer memes took its place. However, the meme’s decline was also hastened by controversies surrounding its origins and meaning.

Some people argued that the 5 Knuckle Shuffle meme was inherently misogynistic and promoted toxic masculinity. The phrase “5 knuckle shuffle” is often used as a way to shame or belittle men who engage in any form of sexual activity other than traditional heterosexual intercourse, and the meme’s association with masturbation reinforced this stereotype. Additionally, the smug expression on the man’s face in the original photograph was seen by some as a symbol of entitlement and arrogance.
