In 2012, a photo of a cat with a permanently grumpy expression became an internet sensation. The cat, whose name was Tardar Sauce but became known as “Grumpy Cat,” inspired countless memes and merchandise. Now, in 2023, the grumpy cat meme is still going strong.
The Origin of the Grumpy Cat Meme
Tardar Sauce’s grumpy expression was caused by a form of feline dwarfism. Her owner, Tabatha Bundesen, posted a photo of her on Reddit in 2012 and the photo quickly went viral. From there, the grumpy cat meme was born. People began creating their own memes using Tardar Sauce’s photo with sarcastic or cynical captions.
