This image, dubbed “Long Cat,” quickly became a popular meme and spread across the web like wildfire. For years, Long Cat remained a beloved figure in internet culture, but sadly, all good things must come to an end. In 2023, it is with a heavy heart that we report the news that Long Cat has passed away.
The History of Long Cat
The original photograph of Long Cat was taken by a Japanese photographer and posted on 2chan, a popular Japanese message board. From there, the image spread to other sites like Reddit and 4chan, where users began creating their own variations of the image with humorous captions. Long Cat quickly became one of the most popular memes of its time, inspiring countless spin-offs and imitations.
Long Cat’s popularity was due in part to its charming and quirky appearance. The cat’s impossibly long body and tail made it look like a cartoon character come to life. Its expressive face and playful demeanor only added to its appeal. Fans of the meme would often create elaborate backstories for Long Cat, imagining it as a superhero or a mythical creature.
The End of an Era
Despite its enduring popularity, all memes eventually fade away. In the case of Long Cat, the meme had been on the decline for several years leading up to its creator’s announcement of the cat’s passing.
