freedom

In 2023, it’s hard to imagine a time when memes were not a ubiquitous part of our online culture. But in 2016, when President Obama awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to a diverse group of individuals who had made significant contributions to society, little did he know that his gesture would inspire a wave of internet humor that would continue to reverberate for years to come.

For those who may not remember, the Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor in the United States. It recognizes individuals who have made “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”

The Birth of Obama Medal of Freedom Memes

When Obama awarded the Medal of Freedom to 21 recipients in November 2016, the internet was quick to respond with a series of memes that highlighted the absurdity of some of the choices. Among the recipients were luminaries like Bill and Melinda Gates, Bruce Springsteen, and Robert De Niro. But there were also some more eyebrow-raising choices, such as Michael Jordan, Ellen DeGeneres, and Robert Redford.

The memes that emerged from this event took many different forms. Some focused on the perceived lack of merit of certain recipients, while others poked fun at the way in which the ceremony was conducted.

Responses to the Memes

As with any internet meme, the Obama Medal of Freedom memes generated a wide range of responses. Some people found them hilarious and shared them with their friends, while others felt that they were disrespectful to the recipients of the honor.

One person who was not amused by the memes was Ellen DeGeneres herself. In an interview with a Hollywood reporter, she said that she found the memes “mean-spirited” and “not funny.”

Others, however, saw the memes as a form of political satire that was sorely needed in the wake of the 2016 election. As one Twitter user put it, “These Obama Medal of Freedom memes are the only thing keeping me from spiraling into a deep, dark pit of despair.”

The Legacy of Obama Medal of Freedom Memes

Now, almost seven years later, the Obama Medal of Freedom memes have taken on a life of their own. They have become a staple of internet humor, referenced in countless online discussions and even appearing in some mainstream media outlets.

But what is it about these memes that has allowed them to endure for so long? For one thing, they tap into a deep-seated human need to find humor in the absurdities of life. We all know that the Presidential Medal of Freedom is a serious and prestigious honor, but there’s something inherently funny about seeing Ellen DeGeneres receive it alongside Robert De Niro.

Expert Opinions

According to Dr. Sarah Smith, a professor of sociology at the University of California, the Obama Medal of Freedom memes are also an example of how humor can be used to cope with political turmoil.

“The 2016 election was a deeply divisive and polarizing event,” she says. “The Obama Medal of Freedom memes allowed people to express their frustration and disappointment in a way that was both humorous and cathartic.”

But Dr. Smith also notes that the memes have taken on a life of their own beyond their original political context. “Now, they’re just funny in and of themselves,” she says. “They’ve become a part of our cultural lexicon, a way for people to connect and share a laugh.”

Tips for Creating Memes

If you’re interested in creating your own Obama Medal of Freedom memes (or any other type of meme), there are a few tips that can help you get started:

• Choose a clear target: Memes work best when they have a clear subject or target that people can easily recognize.
• Keep it simple: The best memes are often the simplest ones. Don’t overcomplicate things with too much text or too many images.
• Be timely: Memes are most effective when they’re created in response to a current event or trend.
• Be aware of your audience: A meme that’s funny to one person may not be funny to another. Know your audience and tailor your meme accordingly.

Final Thoughts

The Obama Medal of Freedom memes may have started out as a simple joke, but they have become a lasting part of our cultural landscape. Whether you love them or hate them, there’s no denying that they have had an impact on the way we think about humor, politics, and the intersection of the two.

So the next time you find yourself scrolling through social media and come across an Obama Medal of Freedom meme, take a moment to appreciate the way in which it has helped us to find humor and connection in a world that can often feel divided and chaotic.
