In 2017, the world was introduced to one of the most infamous music festivals in history – the Fyre Festival. Promoted by social media influencers like Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid, the festival promised a luxurious experience on a private island in the Bahamas. However, what attendees arrived to was far from what was promised, resulting in chaos, disappointment, and ultimately, a slew of hilarious memes that Buzzfeed couldn’t resist.

The Rise of Fyre Festival Memes

As soon as news of the festival’s disastrous first day broke, social media was flooded with images and jokes about the event. From pictures of the sad-looking cheese sandwiches that attendees were served, to comparisons to Lord of the Flies, the Fyre Festival memes quickly went viral.

One Buzzfeed writer, in particular, couldn’t help but jump on the bandwagon. Alanna Bennett penned an article titled “37 Of The Funniest Fyre Festival Memes We’ve Seen So Far” that showcased some of the best and most hilarious memes to come out of the event.

Responses to Buzzfeed’s Article

While some praised Buzzfeed for their coverage of the Fyre Festival memes, others criticized the publication for making light of a situation that left many attendees stranded and out of thousands of dollars.

One commenter wrote, “I get that the Fyre Festival was a disaster, but it’s not really something to joke about. People were really hurt by this and it’s not fair to make light of their experiences.”

Others, however, felt that the memes were a necessary coping mechanism for those who had been scammed by the festival. “Sometimes you just have to laugh to keep from crying,” wrote another commenter.

The Legacy of Fyre Festival Memes

Despite the controversy surrounding them, the Fyre Festival memes have become a cultural touchstone in the years since the event. They’ve been referenced in everything from other memes to pop culture moments, like when Andy King – a key player in the festival’s organization – offered to perform oral sex to get water for the event.

Even as recently as 2023, people are still talking about the Fyre Festival and the memes that came out of it. It just goes to show that sometimes, even the biggest disasters can lead to unexpected moments of humor and levity.

Reflections on the Fyre Festival

Looking back on the Fyre Festival, it’s clear that the event was a cautionary tale about the dangers of social media hype and influencer marketing. It also highlighted the importance of doing research and due diligence before investing in any kind of event or experience.

But perhaps most importantly, the Fyre Festival and its aftermath showed that sometimes, even the most ridiculous and outrageous situations can lead to moments of collective laughter and camaraderie. And in a world that can often feel overwhelming and isolating, that’s a valuable reminder to hold onto.
