It’s hard to believe that internet memes have been around for over a decade now. Starting out as simple images shared on online forums, they quickly took on a life of their own, spreading like wildfire across social media platforms and becoming ingrained in internet culture. From the early days of “LOLcats” to the more recent “distracted boyfriend,” let’s take a look back at some of the most famous internet memes of all time.
The Birth of Memes
The concept of memes actually dates back to the 1970s, when biologist Richard Dawkins first coined the term in his book “The Selfish Gene.” However, it wasn’t until the rise of the internet that memes really took off. One of the earliest examples was the “Dancing Baby,” a 3D animation that went viral in the late 90s. But it wasn’t until the mid-2000s that memes began to truly dominate the internet.
LOLcats
Perhaps the most iconic early meme was the “LOLcat,” which featured pictures of cats with humorous captions written in broken English. The first LOLcat was posted on the imageboard 4chan in 2005, but the meme really took off when it spread to the website I Can Has Cheezburger. At its peak, I Can Has Cheezburger was receiving over a million pageviews a day.
“I remember spending hours scrolling through I Can Has Cheezburger, laughing at all the different cat memes,” says internet user Sarah Johnson. “It was such a simple concept, but it was so funny and relatable.”
Rickrolling
In 2007, a new meme emerged that was less about images and more about music. “Rickrolling” involved tricking someone into clicking a link that led to the music video for Rick Astley’s 1987 hit “Never Gonna Give You Up.” The meme became so popular that even major companies and government organizations got in on the fun, rickrolling their followers on social media.
“I remember the first time I got rickrolled,” says internet user Alex Rodriguez. “I was so confused at first, but then I couldn’t stop laughing. It was such a clever prank.”
Nyan Cat
In 2011, a new meme took the internet by storm: “Nyan Cat.” The meme featured an animated cat with a Pop-Tart body flying through space, leaving a rainbow trail behind it. The accompanying music was a repetitive tune that quickly became stuck in people’s heads.
“Nyan Cat was everywhere for a while,” says internet user Emily Chen. “It was so catchy and cute, and it just made people happy.”
Distracted Boyfriend
One of the more recent memes to go viral is “distracted boyfriend,” which features a stock photo of a man turning to look at another woman while his girlfriend looks on in disapproval. The meme has been used to make jokes about everything from politics to pop culture.
“I think what makes the distracted boyfriend meme so funny is how relatable it is,” says internet user Juan Martinez. “We’ve all been in situations where we’ve been distracted by something else, and this meme captures that feeling perfectly.”
The Legacy of Memes
While individual memes may come and go, the concept of memes themselves has become a permanent part of internet culture. Memes have even been used to spread political messages and promote social causes. But no matter how serious the topic, there’s always room for a good laugh.
“I think memes are important because they provide a way for people to connect and share a sense of humor,” says internet user Rachel Lee. “In a world where we’re all so divided, it’s nice to have something that can bring us together.”
