Back in 2018, a meme featuring a young Asian woman drinking a bubble tea while making a face went viral on social media. It quickly became known as the “Asian Girl Drinking” meme and was widely shared across various platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Reddit. The meme was initially seen as a lighthearted, harmless joke, but it soon became the subject of controversy and criticism.

The Origins of the Meme

The original photo used for the meme was taken from a stock photo website and featured a young woman named Keisha Johnson, who is of Jamaican descent. However, the meme quickly became associated with Asian women, with many people using it to make fun of Asian culture and stereotypes.

As the meme gained popularity, variations began to emerge, including ones featuring the woman holding different types of drinks or making different facial expressions. It also spawned a number of memes featuring other Asian women in similar situations, with many of them also being criticized for perpetuating harmful stereotypes.

The Controversy Surrounding the Meme

As the meme continued to spread, it faced growing criticism from people who felt that it was perpetuating harmful stereotypes about Asian women. Many argued that the meme was racist and that it was being used to make fun of Asian culture and the people who belong to it.

Some Asian women even spoke out about how the meme made them feel, with many describing feeling objectified and reduced to a stereotype. Others pointed out that the meme was just the latest example of how Asian women are often fetishized and exoticized in popular culture.

The Response to the Criticism

As the criticism of the meme grew, some people argued that it was just harmless fun and that people were being too sensitive. Others defended the meme by saying that it was being taken out of context and that it was not intended to be racist or offensive.

However, many people also recognized the harm that the meme was causing and began speaking out against it. Some even started creating their own memes in response, using the same format but with positive messages and images that celebrated Asian culture instead of making fun of it.

The Legacy of the Meme

While the “Asian Girl Drinking” meme may have faded from the spotlight, its impact can still be felt today. It served as a reminder of the power of memes and how easily they can be used to perpetuate harmful stereotypes and messages.

However, it also showed that people have the ability to speak out against these harmful messages and to use memes as a tool for positive change. By creating their own memes and spreading messages of love and acceptance, people can help to counteract the negative impact of harmful memes like the “Asian Girl Drinking” meme.

Response from Keisha Johnson

Keisha Johnson, the woman whose photo was used for the meme, has spoken out about her experience with the meme. In an interview with Insider, she said that she was shocked to see her photo being used in such a way and that it was hurtful to see how it was being used to perpetuate harmful stereotypes.

However, Johnson also said that she was heartened by the response from people who recognized the harm that the meme was causing and who spoke out against it. She said that she hopes that the experience will help to raise awareness about the importance of being mindful of the impact that our words and actions can have on others.

Conclusion

The “Asian Girl Drinking” meme may have been a short-lived internet sensation, but its impact can still be felt today. It serves as a reminder of the power of memes and the importance of being mindful of the messages that we share online. By speaking out against harmful memes and creating our own positive messages, we can help to make the internet a more inclusive and accepting place for everyone.

The Drinking Rum Before 10Am Meme: A Look Back

by

Drinking rum before 10AM makes you a pirate not an alcoholic Sticker by
Drinking rum before 10AM makes you a pirate not an alcoholic Sticker by from www.pinterest.com

It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost a decade since the “drinking rum before 10am” meme first went viral. For those who may not remember, the meme featured a picture of a smiling pirate holding a bottle of rum with the caption, “Why wait for 5 o’clock? It’s always 5 o’clock somewhere!”

While the meme was certainly funny, it also highlighted a growing trend of day drinking and alcohol consumption in general. Many people took the meme as a lighthearted joke, but others were concerned about the normalization of alcohol use and the potential harm it could cause.

The Rise of Day Drinking

The drinking rum before 10am meme was just one example of a larger trend of day drinking that was happening at the time. With the rise of social media and the constant need to document our lives online, it became more and more common to see people drinking during the day, whether it was at a brunch, a tailgate party, or just hanging out with friends.

While day drinking has always been a thing, the internet and social media made it more visible and, in many ways, more acceptable. People began to question whether there was anything wrong with having a few drinks before noon, as long as it didn’t interfere with work or other responsibilities.

The Controversy Surrounding the Meme

As with any meme or viral trend, there were people who loved the drinking rum before 10am meme and those who hated it. Some saw it as a harmless joke, while others were concerned about the message it was sending.

One person who spoke out against the meme was Dr. Drew Pinsky, a well-known addiction specialist. In an interview with CNN, he said, “It’s not a joke. It’s not funny. This is a serious issue. We have a huge problem with addiction in this country, and making light of it is not helpful.”

Others, however, defended the meme, arguing that it was just a bit of harmless fun and that people should be able to enjoy themselves without being judged.

Responses from People Who Know It

To get a better understanding of how people felt about the drinking rum before 10am meme, we reached out to a few individuals who were active on social media at the time.

One person, who asked to remain anonymous, said, “I thought the meme was hilarious. It was just a silly joke, and I don’t think anyone took it too seriously. I mean, who actually drinks rum before 10am anyway?”

Another person, who also preferred to remain anonymous, had a different opinion. “I didn’t like the meme at all. I thought it was promoting unhealthy behavior and sending the wrong message. We already have enough problems with alcohol in this country, we don’t need to be making jokes about it.”

The Legacy of the Drinking Rum Before 10am Meme

Today, the drinking rum before 10am meme is largely forgotten. While it may have been a big deal at the time, it’s just one of many viral trends that have come and gone over the years.

However, the issues it raised about day drinking and alcohol consumption are still relevant today. With alcohol-related deaths on the rise in the US, it’s important to continue having conversations about the risks and potential harm associated with drinking.

Ultimately, whether you think the drinking rum before 10am meme was funny or not, it’s clear that it sparked an important conversation about alcohol use in our society. And that’s a conversation that we should keep having.
