In 2019, a new meme took the internet by storm: the White Claw Hangover meme. For those who aren’t familiar, White Claw is a brand of hard seltzer that became incredibly popular in the United States in the summer of 2019. It was marketed as a low-calorie, low-carb alternative to beer that was perfect for hot weather and outdoor activities. However, as with any alcoholic beverage, drinking too much of it can lead to a nasty hangover the next day.

The Birth of the Meme

The White Claw Hangover meme originated on social media, particularly Twitter and Instagram. It typically featured a photo of someone looking miserable or hungover, along with the caption “Me after drinking White Claw all night.” The meme quickly went viral, and soon people were using it to describe any situation in which they felt terrible or regretful.

One reason the meme caught on so quickly is that it was relatable. Anyone who has ever had too much to drink can identify with the feeling of waking up the next day with a pounding headache and a sense of regret. The fact that it specifically referenced White Claw made it even more relevant, as the drink had become so ubiquitous that almost everyone had tried it at least once.

Response from White Claw

As the meme continued to gain traction, White Claw took notice. In September 2019, the company released a statement in response to the meme, acknowledging that “the internet has a way of making fun of things that are mainstream.” However, they also pointed out that “moderation is always key” when it comes to drinking, and encouraged consumers to enjoy their product responsibly.

Comments from People

Some people found the company’s response to be a bit tone-deaf, as it seemed to ignore the fact that the meme was largely a joke and not meant to be taken seriously. Others appreciated the reminder to drink responsibly, especially given the popularity of the drink among young people.

Overall, the White Claw Hangover meme was a cultural phenomenon that captured the zeitgeist of 2019. It was a lighthearted way to poke fun at a popular product while also acknowledging the dangers of excessive drinking. While the meme may have died down in the years since, it remains a memorable moment in internet history and a reminder of the power of social media to create and spread new trends.
