One of the most popular memes of recent years features a cat with bulging eyes and a wide-open mouth, appearing to be choking on something. This meme, known as the “choking meme cat,” has taken the internet by storm and sparked countless parodies and remixes. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the origins of this meme, its impact on popular culture, and what you need to know about it.

Origins of the Choking Meme Cat

The original image of the choking meme cat comes from a video posted on Twitter in 2019. The video shows a cat named Smudge sitting at a dinner table with a plate of vegetables in front of him. As someone off-camera touches the cat’s paw, Smudge looks up with a shocked expression and begins to make a gagging motion with his mouth. This moment was captured in a still image and soon became a viral sensation.

According to the cat’s owner, the video was taken at a family dinner and was not intended to go viral. However, once the image started circulating online, it quickly gained popularity and became one of the most recognizable memes on the internet.

The Impact of the Choking Meme Cat

The choking meme cat has become a ubiquitous presence on social media and the internet at large. The image has been used in countless memes, often with humorous captions or altered to fit different contexts. The popularity of the meme has also led to a surge in merchandise, with t-shirts, mugs, and other products featuring the image being sold online.

One of the reasons the choking meme cat has become so popular is its versatility. The image can be used to express a wide range of emotions, from shock and surprise to disgust and frustration. This makes the meme a popular choice for internet users looking to add some humor to their social media posts.

Parodies and Remixes

One of the most interesting aspects of the choking meme cat phenomenon is the number of parodies and remixes it has spawned. Internet users have taken the original image and created countless variations, often incorporating other popular memes or cultural references.

For example, one popular parody features the choking meme cat with a speech bubble saying “I can haz air?” This is a reference to the popular “I can haz cheezburger” meme, which features a cat asking for a cheeseburger.
