It’s been a few years since the “Are You Really In Charge Here?” meme trended, but it still resonates with people today. If you’re not familiar with the meme, it features a photo of a man speaking on a phone with an expression of bewilderment, and the caption reads “Are you really in charge here?” The meme was used to poke fun at situations where people in positions of authority seemed to have no idea what they were doing.
The Origins of the Meme
The man in the photo is John Travolta, and the original scene is from the 2010 movie “From Paris with Love.” In the movie, Travolta’s character is a tough CIA agent who is on a mission to stop a terrorist attack. The “Are You Really In Charge Here?” line is delivered in a sarcastic tone to a French bureaucrat who is not being very helpful.
The meme became popular in 2017, when it was posted on a subreddit called r/youdontsurf. The subreddit is dedicated to sharing funny captions on stock photos, and the “Are You Really In Charge Here?” meme fit right in. From there, it quickly spread to other social media platforms and became a viral sensation.
The Appeal of the Meme
Part of the reason the “Are You Really In Charge Here?” meme became so popular is that it resonated with people who have experienced frustration with authority figures. Whether it’s dealing with a difficult boss, a clueless government official, or a customer service representative who can’t solve your problem, we’ve all been in situations where we’ve wondered if the person in charge knows what they’re doing.
Another reason the meme was so popular is that it’s funny. The expression on Travolta’s face is priceless, and the caption is clever. It’s the perfect combination of humor and relatability.
The Legacy of the Meme
Although the “Are You Really In Charge Here?” meme isn’t as popular as it once was, it still has a legacy. The meme has spawned countless variations and spin-offs, including “Are You The Manager?” and “Are You The CEO?” There’s even a Facebook group called “Are You Really In Charge Here?” that has over 6,000 members.
Some people see the meme as a way to hold authority figures accountable. By calling attention to situations where people in power are not performing their duties effectively, the meme can be a tool for change. Others see it as just a harmless joke.
The Response to the Meme
As with any viral trend, the “Are You Really In Charge Here?” meme has received its fair share of criticism. Some people feel that it is disrespectful to authority figures, and that it promotes a negative attitude towards people in positions of power. Others feel that it reinforces a culture of disrespect and cynicism.
However, many people see the meme as a way to express frustration with a system that often seems unresponsive to the needs of ordinary people. By using humor to highlight the absurdity of certain situations, the meme can be a way to cope with difficult circumstances.
