It’s been almost a week since River Plate defeated Boca Juniors 3-1 in the Superclasico, but the memes just keep coming. From the internet’s favorite Pepe the Frog to a classic Simpsons reference, fans have taken to social media to express their joy, frustration, and confusion over the match.

The Build-up

The Superclasico is always a highly anticipated match in Argentina, but this year’s edition had even more hype due to the recent Copa Libertadores final between the two teams. Boca Juniors won that match in 2022, but River Plate got their revenge in the first meeting of the 2023 season.

Leading up to the match, fans on both sides were confident in their team’s chances. Boca fans were excited to see new signing Cristiano Ronaldo in action, while River fans were hopeful that their team could continue their strong start to the season.

The Match

Despite Ronaldo’s early goal, River Plate dominated the match and ended up winning 3-1. Goals from Matias Suarez, Rafael Santos Borre, and Julian Alvarez sealed the victory for the home team.

While River fans were overjoyed, Boca fans were understandably disappointed. Many took to social media to express their frustration and anger, while others simply resigned themselves to the fact that their team had been outplayed.

The Memes

As is often the case in modern football, the memes quickly followed the match. Fans from all over the world shared their favorite jokes, memes, and gifs on social media.

One of the most popular memes featured Pepe the Frog, a longtime internet favorite. The meme shows Pepe wearing a River Plate shirt and celebrating the victory, with the caption “River wins Superclasico, Pepe approves.”

Another popular meme featured a classic Simpsons reference. The meme shows Bart Simpson writing “River 3 Boca 1” on a chalkboard over and over again, in reference to the famous opening sequence of the show.

Responses from Fans

The memes have been met with mixed reactions from fans. Some have found them hilarious and have been sharing them with their friends, while others have criticized them as being disrespectful or mean-spirited.

One Boca fan, who wished to remain anonymous, said “I don’t think it’s funny to make fun of someone else’s team. We lost, but that doesn’t mean we have to be the butt of everyone’s jokes. I wish people would show a little more respect.”

On the other hand, River fan Maria Martinez said “I love the memes! They’re a great way to celebrate our victory and have a laugh with our friends. It’s all in good fun.”
