belated

If you’re an avid meme lover, chances are you’ve come across a “late meme template” at least once. These templates are essentially old formats that suddenly resurface in the meme world, often with a new twist or a fresh take. Late meme templates have been gaining popularity in recent years, and it’s not hard to see why.

While fresh and original memes are always welcome, there’s something about a familiar template that just hits different. The nostalgia factor, the comfort of the familiar, and the sheer versatility of these templates make them a hit among meme enthusiasts.

The Anatomy of a Late Meme Template

So what makes a meme template “late,” exactly? It’s all about timing. A late meme template is one that was popular at some point in the past, but has since fallen out of use. These templates can range from the classic “distracted boyfriend” to the lesser-known “two buttons” format.

What sets a late meme template apart from a regular template is the context in which it resurfaces. A late meme template often comes back with a new twist, whether it’s a different caption, a new image overlay, or a whole new meme format altogether.

The Appeal of Late Meme Templates

So why are late meme templates so appealing? For starters, they tap into our collective nostalgia. Seeing an old meme format that we haven’t seen in a while can bring back fond memories of simpler times, before the internet was quite so saturated with memes.

But there’s more to it than that. Late meme templates also offer a fresh take on an old format. By subverting our expectations with a new caption or image overlay, creators are able to breathe new life into a tired format.

Finally, late meme templates are incredibly versatile. Because they’re already familiar to so many people, creators can use them to convey a wide range of emotions and ideas. From political commentary to relatable everyday moments, late meme templates can be adapted to fit just about any situation.

Famous Late Meme Templates

So what are some examples of late meme templates that have gained popularity in recent years? Here are just a few:

“Expanding Brain”

This format features a series of images with captions that show a thought process “expanding” to a more complex (and often absurd) conclusion. This meme format was popular in the early 2010s, but has since made a comeback with new variations on the theme.

“Mocking Spongebob”

This meme template features an image of Spongebob Squarepants with a distorted face, accompanied by a caption in alternating upper and lowercase letters. The format was originally popularized in 2017, but has since made a comeback with new variations and captions.

“Surprised Pikachu”

This meme template features an image of Pikachu from the Pokémon franchise, looking shocked and surprised. The format was popularized in 2018, but has since made a comeback with new captions and variations.

The Future of Late Meme Templates

So where does the future of late meme templates lie? It’s hard to say for sure, but one thing is certain: as long as there are old meme formats gathering dust in the archives, there will always be a chance for a late meme template to make a comeback.

Some people have their doubts, however. “I think late meme templates are just a way for people to be lazy and unoriginal,” says meme enthusiast John Smith. “Why bother coming up with something new when you can just slap a new caption on an old template?”

But others disagree. “There’s something special about seeing an old format come back in a new way,” says meme creator Jane Doe. “It’s a way to pay homage to the memes that came before us, while still adding our own spin on things.”

Whether you love them or hate them, there’s no denying that late meme templates are here to stay. So the next time you come across an old format with a new twist, take a moment to appreciate the creativity and ingenuity that went into making it fresh again.
