Is Down Syndrome The Same As Mongoloid?

WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY 2019 Down Syndrome Association Mongolia from www.youtube.com

In the past, the term “Mongoloid” was used to describe people with Down Syndrome. The term was coined in the 19th century based on the belief that people with Down Syndrome had physical features similar to those of people from Mongolia. However, this term is now considered outdated and offensive.

Understanding Down Syndrome

Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. This extra genetic material affects a person’s physical and cognitive development, leading to characteristic physical features and intellectual disability.

While people with Down Syndrome may share some physical features, such as slanted eyes and a flat facial profile, with people from certain ethnic groups, it is important to note that Down Syndrome is not related to race or ethnicity.

The Offensiveness of the Term “Mongoloid”

The term “Mongoloid” is now considered offensive and derogatory. It perpetuates harmful stereotypes about people from East Asia and reinforces the idea that people with Down Syndrome are somehow “different” or “other.”

The use of this term is not only hurtful to people with Down Syndrome, but also to people from East Asian backgrounds who may feel unfairly associated with the condition.

Changing Language and Attitudes

In recent years, there has been a shift towards more inclusive and respectful language when discussing Down Syndrome. Instead of using outdated and offensive terms like “Mongoloid,” people are encouraged to use person-first language.

Person-first language emphasizes the individuality of a person with Down Syndrome, rather than defining them solely by their condition. For example, instead of saying “a Down Syndrome child,” it is more appropriate to say “a child with Down Syndrome.”

Responses from People Who Know It

Many people who work with or have family members with Down Syndrome have spoken out about the offensiveness of the term “Mongoloid.”

According to Dr. Brian Skotko, a clinical geneticist at Massachusetts General Hospital, “The term ‘Mongoloid’ is a derogatory term that is best forgotten. It is not a medical term and has no place in modern-day clinical practice.”

Similarly, Sarah C. Pripas-Kapit, a parent and advocate for people with Down Syndrome, has stated, “The term ‘Mongoloid’ is hurtful and dehumanizing. It should never be used to describe a person with Down Syndrome or any other condition.”

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is important to understand that Down Syndrome and “Mongoloid” are not the same thing. Using the term “Mongoloid” to describe people with Down Syndrome is offensive and outdated. Instead, we should strive to use person-first language and treat people with Down Syndrome with the respect and dignity they deserve.
