anthem

In 2018, actor and singer Jamie Foxx made headlines for his rendition of the National Anthem at the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight. However, it wasn’t his singing that caught the internet’s attention, but rather a hilarious meme that ensued from his performance.

The Meme

During his performance, Foxx hit a high note that sounded like a screeching cat. The internet quickly took notice and turned it into a meme, with people dubbing it the “Jamie Foxx National Anthem Cat.” Memes flooded social media platforms, with people using the audio in various comical ways.

One popular use of the meme was to replace the audio of a car screeching to a halt with Foxx’s high note. Another common use was to insert the audio into videos of people falling or failing at something, adding a hilarious twist to the original footage.

Foxx’s Response

Foxx took the meme in stride and even shared some of his favorite ones on his social media accounts. In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, he explained that he had no idea his performance would turn into a meme and that he was surprised by the internet’s reaction.

However, he also took the opportunity to poke fun at himself, saying, “When I hit the note, I thought I was doing something! But it went viral for all the wrong reasons.”

The Legacy

The Jamie Foxx National Anthem meme has become a staple in internet culture and has been referenced in various forms of media. In 2021, it even made an appearance in the popular video game “Fortnite,” where players could use it as an emote.

Many people still find the meme hilarious and continue to use it in various ways. However, some argue that it perpetuates the idea that making fun of someone’s mistakes is acceptable. Others argue that it’s harmless and just a funny moment in pop culture.
