Alignment chart memes have become an incredibly popular format on Reddit in recent years. This meme format consists of a grid with four quadrants, each of which represents a specific type of character or archetype. The quadrants are labeled with different alignments, such as “lawful good,” “chaotic evil,” “true neutral,” and so on. In this article, we’ll explore the origins of alignment chart memes, how they’ve evolved over time, and why they’ve become so popular on Reddit. We’ll also provide some tips on how to create your own alignment chart memes and showcase some of the best examples from around the web.

The Origins of Alignment Chart Memes

The concept of aligning characters along a moral spectrum dates back to early tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. In these games, players would create characters with specific alignments, which would determine how they would behave in different situations. The modern alignment chart meme format, however, likely originated on 4chan’s /tg/ board in the mid-2000s. These early alignment charts were often used to categorize different factions or characters in popular media, such as Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. Over time, the format evolved to include more nuanced and specific character archetypes, such as “the gamer,” “the edgelord,” or “the basic white girl.” As the format became more popular, it spread to other online communities like Reddit, where it’s now a staple of many subreddits.

The Appeal of Alignment Chart Memes

So why have alignment chart memes become so popular on Reddit and other online communities? One reason is that they provide a simple and effective way to categorize and analyze different types of people or things. For example, a political subreddit might use an alignment chart to categorize different political ideologies or figures. A gaming subreddit might use one to categorize different game genres or player types. And a meme subreddit might use one to categorize different types of memes or meme formats.
