2003

It’s hard to believe that it’s been twenty years since the dawn of the modern internet era. Back in 2003, most people were still using dial-up connections and social media was in its infancy. However, one thing that has remained consistent throughout the years is the popularity of memes. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and explore some of the most iconic memes from 2003.

The Dancing Baby

One of the earliest internet memes, the Dancing Baby first appeared in the late 90s but gained widespread popularity in 2003. The 3D animation of a baby dancing to the song “Hooked on a Feeling” was created using the software character studio and quickly became a viral sensation. The Dancing Baby appeared on everything from t-shirts to TV shows and even made an appearance in the opening credits of the TV series Ally McBeal.

All Your Base Are Belong to Us

This meme originated from the opening cutscene of the 1991 video game Zero Wing. The poorly translated text “all your base are belong to us” quickly became a catchphrase and was used in countless internet memes. The meme was so popular that it even inspired a music video which went viral on early video sharing websites like Ebaumsworld and Newgrounds.

Star Wars Kid

In 2003, a video was leaked onto the internet of a teenager swinging a golf ball retriever like a lightsaber. The video was originally meant to be a private video project but was leaked onto the internet and quickly became a viral sensation. The teenager in the video, Ghyslain Raza, was relentlessly bullied in school and eventually had to leave due to the overwhelming attention he received. The Star Wars Kid meme has been criticized for the way it exploited Raza’s mental health struggles.

Peanut Butter Jelly Time

The Peanut Butter Jelly Time meme originated from a flash animation created by Ryan Gancenia Etrata. The animation features a dancing banana singing the lyrics to the song “Peanut Butter Jelly Time” by Buckwheat Boyz. The meme quickly spread across the internet and was even referenced in an episode of the TV show Family Guy.

Comments from the People

“I remember spending hours on Ebaumsworld just watching these videos over and over again. It’s crazy to think how different the internet was back then.”

– John, 35

“I was in high school when the Star Wars Kid video came out and I remember everyone talking about it. Looking back, it’s kind of sad how he was treated. I hope he’s doing okay now.”

– Sarah, 32

“I still use ‘all your base are belong to us’ as a joke with my friends. It’s one of those memes that has stood the test of time.”

– Mike, 40

Conclusion

Memes from 2003 may seem quaint by today’s standards, but they paved the way for the internet humor we know and love today. These early memes were a reflection of the internet’s wild west days, where anything was possible and anything could go viral. While some of these memes may have aged poorly, they still hold a special place in the hearts of those who were there to witness their rise to fame.
