surprise

It’s been nearly four years since the infamous “surprise mechanics” meme first surfaced on the internet in 2019. The meme was created in response to a statement made by EA’s VP of Legal and Government Affairs, Kerry Hopkins, during a UK parliamentary hearing on video game addiction. Hopkins referred to loot boxes, a popular game mechanic that allows players to purchase randomized virtual items, as “surprise mechanics.”

The term quickly gained notoriety and sparked a heated debate among gamers, developers, and regulators. While some argued that loot boxes were akin to gambling and should be regulated as such, others defended them as a legitimate game mechanic that added excitement and variety to gameplay.

The Debate Continues

Fast forward to 2023, and the debate over loot boxes and “surprise mechanics” is still raging. In fact, the controversy has only intensified in recent years, as more and more countries have taken steps to regulate or ban loot boxes altogether.

One of the primary concerns surrounding loot boxes is their potential to exploit vulnerable players, particularly children, who may not fully understand the risks involved. Critics argue that the randomized nature of loot boxes, combined with the lure of rare or valuable items, can create a gambling-like addiction that can be difficult to break.

On the other hand, proponents of loot boxes point out that they are entirely optional, and that players are not required to purchase them in order to enjoy the game. They also argue that the revenue generated by loot boxes can help support ongoing development and maintenance of the game, and that many players enjoy the thrill of opening them.

The Legal Landscape

Despite the ongoing debate, several countries have already taken action to regulate or ban loot boxes. In 2020, Belgium banned loot boxes, calling them a form of gambling. The Netherlands followed suit shortly thereafter, and several other countries, including Australia and the UK, have launched investigations into the practice.

In the US, there has been less movement on the regulatory front, though several bills have been proposed that would require greater transparency around loot boxes and their odds. Some states, including Hawaii and Washington, have also introduced legislation that would regulate or ban loot boxes.

The Response from Industry Leaders

So, what do industry leaders have to say about all of this? Some have been more vocal than others. In 2019, EA defended the use of loot boxes as a legitimate game mechanic, and stated that they did not consider them to be gambling. However, the company has also made changes to their games in response to criticism, such as removing paid loot boxes from Star Wars Battlefront II.

Other companies, such as Blizzard and Activision, have also faced backlash over their use of loot boxes. In 2020, Blizzard was sued over its use of loot boxes in Overwatch, and the company ultimately settled the case for $10 million. Activision faced similar criticism over its use of loot boxes in Call of Duty: WWII.

What Gamers Are Saying

Of course, the opinions of gamers themselves are also an important part of the conversation. Some players are staunchly opposed to loot boxes and other forms of “surprise mechanics,” arguing that they are exploitative and take away from the core gameplay experience. Others see them as a harmless addition to the game, or even as a fun way to add variety and excitement.

One Reddit user, for example, wrote, “I understand the concerns about loot boxes, but I also think they can be a fun addition to the game. It’s like opening a present, and you never know what you’re going to get.”

Another user, however, had a different perspective: “I hate loot boxes. They’re a waste of money, and they ruin the game for people who can’t afford to buy them.”

The Future of “Surprise Mechanics”

So, where does all of this leave us? It’s clear that the controversy surrounding loot boxes and “surprise mechanics” isn’t going away anytime soon. As more countries look to regulate or ban the practice, and as more gamers voice their opinions, it’s likely that we’ll see continued changes and evolution in the gaming industry.

Whether or not loot boxes themselves will ultimately survive remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the debate over “surprise mechanics” will continue to be a hot topic for years to come.
