These memes have become so popular that they’re now a staple of allergy season on social media. But why do they resonate with so many people?

The Truth About Summer Allergies

While the summer allergies meme may be exaggerated for comedic effect, there is some truth behind the humor. Seasonal allergies are a real condition that affects millions of people each year. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, as many as 30% of adults and 40% of children in the United States suffer from seasonal allergies.

The most common triggers of summer allergies include:

• Pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds
• Mold spores
• Dust mites

When you’re exposed to these allergens, your body’s immune system overreacts and produces histamine, which causes the symptoms of seasonal allergies. These symptoms can include:

• Sneezing
• Runny or stuffy nose
• Itchy or watery eyes
• Itchy throat, nose, or ears
• Headache

As anyone who suffers from seasonal allergies can attest, these symptoms can be incredibly uncomfortable. That’s why the summer allergies meme has struck a chord with so many people. It provides a lighthearted way to acknowledge the struggles of dealing with seasonal allergies.
