sticks

Have you ever heard of the “stupid people are like glow sticks” meme? It’s a popular internet meme that compares people who don’t seem to have much going for them to glow sticks. The idea is that just like how you have to “snap” a glow stick to activate it, some people need a wake-up call or a life-changing event to become productive members of society.

While this meme may seem harmless and even humorous to some, it’s actually quite problematic. Here are a few reasons why:

1. It reinforces negative stereotypes

The “stupid people are like glow sticks” meme reinforces negative stereotypes about people who may not have had the same opportunities or resources as others. It implies that if someone isn’t successful or productive, it’s because they’re not trying hard enough or they’re just inherently “stupid.” This is simply not true and is a harmful way of thinking.

2. It’s ableist

The use of the word “stupid” in this meme is ableist. It implies that people who may have intellectual or learning disabilities are somehow less valuable or capable than others. This is not only untrue, but it’s also harmful and hurtful to those who may struggle with these issues.

3. It ignores systemic issues

The “stupid people are like glow sticks” meme ignores the fact that there are systemic issues at play that can prevent people from achieving success or productivity. Issues like poverty, lack of access to education or healthcare, and discrimination can all play a role in someone’s ability to succeed. Ignoring these factors and simply blaming individuals for their lack of success is not only unfair but also unhelpful.
