It’s been a few years since Splatoon 2 hit the Nintendo Switch, but the game’s impact is still being felt in the world of memes. One of the best places to explore the depths of Splatoon memes is on TV Tropes, a popular wiki dedicated to cataloging and analyzing various storytelling tropes across media. In this article, we’ll take a deep dive into some of the most popular Splatoon memes on TV Tropes, and what they say about the game’s community and culture.

The Origins of Splatoon Memes

Before we get into specific memes, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on why Splatoon has become such a fertile ground for meme culture. Part of it has to do with the game’s unique setting and characters. The world of Splatoon is populated by humanoid squids and octopi who engage in a variety of turf wars using ink-based weapons. The game’s bright colors, funky music, and quirky design all lend themselves to creating memorable and hilarious moments.

Another reason why Splatoon memes have taken off is the game’s strong online community. Since the game’s release, players have been able to connect with each other through various social media platforms, including Reddit, Twitter, and Discord. This has led to the creation of countless fan art, comics, and memes that have spread like wildfire across the internet.

The “Woomy” Meme

Perhaps the most iconic Splatoon meme is the “woomy” meme. This meme is based on a sound effect that the female Inkling character makes when she jumps. The sound is a high-pitched “woomy,” and it has become a catchphrase among Splatoon fans. The meme has spawned countless remixes, parodies, and fan art, and it’s even been referenced in official Splatoon merchandise.

One commenter on TV Tropes notes, “I love how the ‘woomy’ meme shows that even something as small as a sound effect can become a cultural phenomenon if it resonates with people. It’s a testament to the power of the Splatoon community and how they can take something small and turn it into something big.”

The “Marie is a Thug” Meme

Another popular Splatoon meme is the “Marie is a thug” meme. Marie is one of the game’s two hosts, alongside her sister Callie. The meme is based on a line of dialogue that Marie says during a Splatoon 2 Splatfest event, where players can choose between two sides in a themed competition. Marie’s side was “Money vs. Love,” and when asked to explain her choice, she responded, “Money, because I’m a thug.”

The meme has since taken on a life of its own, with fans creating fan art and comics that depict Marie as a tough, streetwise gangster. One commenter on TV Tropes says, “I love how this meme takes a character who is generally portrayed as sweet and innocent and turns her into a badass. It’s a great example of how fans can subvert expectations and create something entirely new.”

The “Off the Hook” Meme

Off the Hook is the name of the musical duo that hosts Splatoon 2’s news broadcasts. The duo is made up of Pearl, a fierce and confident rapper, and Marina, a shy and introverted DJ. The “Off the Hook” meme is based on a line of dialogue that Pearl says during one of the broadcasts, where she exclaims, “Off the hook!”

Since then, the phrase has become a catchphrase among Splatoon fans, and it’s often used to describe anything that’s particularly exciting or cool. The meme has spawned countless remixes and fan art, and it’s even been referenced in official Splatoon merchandise.

Conclusion

These are just a few examples of the many Splatoon memes that can be found on TV Tropes. Whether you’re a die-hard Splatoon fan or just someone who enjoys a good meme, there’s something for everyone in the world of Splatoon memes. As one commenter on TV Tropes notes, “Splatoon memes are a great way to connect with other fans and share your love for the game. They’re a testament to the creativity and passion of the Splatoon community, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with next.”
