If you’re an avid internet user, you’ve probably come across the “soon” meme at some point. Whether it’s a picture of a dog sitting in front of a computer with the caption “I’ll do it soon,” or a video game developer promising new content “soon,” this meme has become a staple of online humor. But what does it actually mean? Let’s dive into the origins and usage of the “soon” meme in English.
The Origins of the “Soon” Meme
The first recorded use of the “soon” meme dates back to 2010, when a user on the gaming forum TeamLiquid posted a thread titled “SC2: Soon.” The thread was in reference to the highly-anticipated release of the video game StarCraft II, which had been delayed multiple times. The thread featured a picture of a Blizzard employee holding up a sign that read “Soon,” and the image quickly spread across the internet.
Since then, the “soon” meme has been used in countless contexts, from video game delays to procrastination to political promises. It has become a shorthand way of expressing skepticism or frustration with promises of future events that seem unlikely to materialize.
The Many Interpretations of “Soon”
One of the reasons the “soon” meme has become so popular is its flexibility. Depending on the context, “soon” can mean a variety of things. Here are some of the most common interpretations:
- There is no specific timeline for the promised event
- The promised event is unlikely to happen at all
- The promised event will happen eventually, but not as soon as expected
- The person making the promise is intentionally vague or evasive
Of course, these interpretations are not mutually exclusive, and the meaning of “soon” can vary depending on the person using it and the context in which it is used.
Responses to the “Soon” Meme
As with any meme, the “soon” meme has its detractors as well as its fans. Some people find it overused or unoriginal, while others appreciate its humor and versatility.
