It’s been almost three decades since Pokemon was first introduced to the world, yet the craze for these pocket monsters continues to grow. While the battle mechanics, the storyline, and the graphics have all evolved, there’s one aspect of Pokemon that has remained constant: the memes.
From the classic ‘I choose you!’ to the more recent ‘this isn’t even my final form,’ Pokemon memes have become an integral part of the fandom. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the coolest Pokemon memes that have tickled our funny bones over the years.
Table of Contents
The Classic Memes
Let’s start with the memes that have been around since the early days of Pokemon. One of the most iconic is the ‘I choose you!’ meme, which originates from the first episode of the Pokemon anime. In this scene, Ash Ketchum chooses Pikachu as his first Pokemon, and the rest is history.
Another classic meme is the ‘Magikarp used Splash!’ joke. Magikarp is a notoriously weak Pokemon that can only use Splash, a move that does no damage. The meme implies that Magikarp is useless in battle, which is why it’s often used as a joke.
The Starter Memes
One of the most popular memes in recent years is the starter meme. This meme involves choosing one of the three starter Pokemon (usually from the latest generation) and then creating a scenario where that Pokemon is the best choice. For example, ‘Pick Scorbunny, because he can cook you a nice meal after a tough battle!’
People love this meme because it allows them to express their love for their favorite starter Pokemon in a humorous way. It’s also a great way to start a debate among fans about which starter is truly the best.
The Evolution Memes
Another popular meme format involves the Pokemon evolution process. In this meme, a picture of a Pokemon’s first form is shown, followed by a picture of its final form. The caption is usually something along the lines of ‘Level 1 vs. Level 100.’
This meme is popular because it highlights the drastic changes that some Pokemon go through during the evolution process. It’s also a great way to poke fun at some of the less impressive Pokemon designs.
The Galar Region Memes
The most recent Pokemon game, Pokemon Sword and Shield, takes place in the Galar region. As expected, this has led to a whole new set of memes. One of the most popular involves the character Hop, who is the player’s rival in the game.
Hop is often portrayed as a clueless and annoying character, which has led to many hilarious memes. For example, ‘When Hop tells you his entire life story after a single battle.’
