In 2012, the National Football League (NFL) had a referee lockout that resulted in the league hiring replacement referees for the first three weeks of the regular season. This decision proved to be a controversial one, as the replacement referees made several questionable calls that impacted the outcome of games. As a result, NFL fans took to the internet to express their frustration and amusement through the creation of memes. Here, we take a look back at some of the most memorable NFL replacement refs memes.
The Replacement Referees: Who Were They?
Before we delve into the memes, it’s important to understand who the replacement referees were. The NFL locked out its regular referees in June 2012 after they were unable to come to a new collective bargaining agreement. The league then hired replacement referees, who were mostly from lower levels of college football and other professional leagues. The replacement referees had little to no experience officiating NFL games, which led to several controversial calls that impacted the outcome of games.
The Memes: A Mix of Frustration and Amusement
The replacement referees’ poor performance on the field sparked a wave of memes across social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Many of these memes were a mix of frustration and amusement, as fans expressed their disbelief at some of the calls that were made. One of the most popular memes was a picture of a referee wearing a Green Bay Packers hat, which was a reference to the controversial “Fail Mary” play that occurred during a game between the Packers and the Seattle Seahawks.
Response from Fans:

The Aftermath: The Return of the Regular Referees
After three weeks of the regular season, the NFL and its regular referees came to an agreement, and the regular referees returned to work. The replacement referees were widely criticized for their poor performance, and the memes that were created during that time served as a reminder of the league’s mistake. The NFL learned a valuable lesson about the importance of having experienced and qualified referees on the field.
