The Origins of the “Reality is Often Disappointing” Meme
The “reality is often disappointing” meme originated from a scene in the Marvel movie, Avengers: Infinity War. In the film, the villain Thanos is on a quest to collect all six Infinity Stones, which would give him the power to wipe out half of all life in the universe. When he finally succeeds in his mission, he snaps his fingers and half of all living creatures vanish into thin air.
In the aftermath of the snap, the character Doctor Strange says to Iron Man, “We’re in the endgame now,” to which Iron Man replies, “Yeah, but this is the fight of our lives, and we’re going to win.” Doctor Strange then responds with the now-famous line, “I went forward in time to view alternate futures. To see all the possible outcomes of the coming conflict.” Iron Man asks him how many outcomes he saw, and Doctor Strange replies, “14,000,605.”
Iron Man then asks, “How many did we win?” to which Doctor Strange responds, “One.” The scene then ends with Iron Man saying, “So we’re in the endgame now,” and Doctor Strange saying, “Mr. Stark, I don’t feel so good,” as he starts to disintegrate.
It was Doctor Strange’s line, “I went forward in time to view alternate futures. To see all the possible outcomes of the coming conflict,” that inspired the “reality is often disappointing” meme. The line became a popular way to express disappointment or frustration with the way things had turned out, and soon, people were using it to make jokes and create memes.
The Rise of the “Reality is Often Disappointing” Meme
As with most internet trends, the “reality is often disappointing” meme began to gain traction on social media platforms like Twitter, Reddit, and Instagram. People started using the line in a variety of different contexts, from politics to pop culture.
One popular variation of the meme involved using it to express disappointment with the outcome of a sporting event. For example, after a team lost a game, someone might tweet, “I went forward in time to view alternate futures. To see all the possible outcomes of the game. There were none where we won.”
Another variation involved using the meme to express disappointment with the ending of a TV show or movie. For example, after the controversial final season of Game of Thrones aired, someone might tweet, “I went forward in time to view alternate futures. To see all the possible outcomes of Game of Thrones. There were none where the ending wasn’t a complete disaster.”
The Fall of the “Reality is Often Disappointing” Meme
As with all internet trends, the “reality is often disappointing” meme eventually lost its popularity. People moved on to new memes, and the joke became stale. But the meme’s downfall was also somewhat hastened by the response of people who were tired of seeing it.
Some people criticized the “reality is often disappointing” meme for being too negative and cynical. They argued that it was promoting a defeatist attitude and that it was unhealthy to constantly focus on the negative aspects of life. Others simply found the joke to be overused and unfunny.
Despite the backlash, the “reality is often disappointing” meme had a good run. It gave people a way to express their disappointment and frustration in a lighthearted way, and it provided a welcome break from the seriousness of everyday life.
Final Thoughts
In the end, the “reality is often disappointing” meme was just another internet trend that had its moment in the spotlight before fading away. But it’s worth remembering that memes like this one can have a real impact on how we view the world.
While it’s important to be able to laugh at ourselves and find humor in difficult situations, it’s also important to maintain a positive outlook and focus on the good things in life. So the next time you’re feeling disappointed or frustrated, try to find the silver lining instead of dwelling on the negative. Because as Doctor Strange himself might say, “There’s always a chance that things will turn out for the better.”
