In 2017, Disney made headlines when it announced its plan to acquire 21st Century Fox for a staggering $71.3 billion. The deal promised to bring together two media giants and usher in a new era of entertainment. But for many, the news was met with skepticism and a healthy dose of humor. As it turns out, the internet loves a good merger meme, and the Disney-Fox deal was no exception.

The Memes Begin
Almost immediately after the announcement, social media was flooded with memes poking fun at the merger. Some joked about the potential crossover between Disney and Fox properties, while others made light of the massive price tag. One image showed Mickey Mouse holding a sign that read “I spent $71 billion on this meme.” Another featured the classic “Spider-Man pointing at Spider-Man” meme, with one Spider-Man labeled “Disney” and the other “Fox.”
The memes kept coming in the months that followed. When the deal was finally approved by regulators in March of 2019, Twitter exploded with jokes about the “House of Mouse” gaining even more power. Some memes imagined Disney characters taking over Fox shows, while others riffed on the idea of Disney buying up everything in sight.
Expert Opinion
Comedian and internet personality Demi Adejuyigbe weighed in on the meme phenomenon in a tweet. “I love that the Disney/Fox merger is so boring and corporate that the only way anyone can process it is through memes,” he wrote. “The internet has made corporate consolidation fun and that’s beautiful.”
What The Merger Means For Entertainment
While the memes provided some much-needed levity, the Disney-Fox deal was a serious business move with major implications for the entertainment industry. Disney’s acquisition of Fox gave the company control over a massive library of content, including popular franchises like X-Men, Deadpool, and The Simpsons. It also gave Disney a foothold in the world of streaming, as it prepared to launch its own streaming service, Disney+.
But the merger wasn’t without controversy. Some critics argued that the deal would limit competition and lead to higher prices for consumers. Others worried about the impact on the industry as a whole, as fewer companies controlled more and more of the media landscape.
Expert Opinion
Writer and media analyst Matt Stoller shared his concerns in a tweet. “The Disney/Fox merger is a disaster for everyone but the executives who enriched themselves,” he wrote. “It’s a sign that the government’s antitrust policy has failed and that corporate power is out of control.”
The Future of Memes
As the dust settled on the merger, the memes continued to flow. Some joked about the idea of Disney taking over everything, from football teams to entire countries. Others imagined Disney characters interacting with Fox properties in unexpected ways.
But as the entertainment landscape continued to shift, it remained to be seen what the future of memes would hold. Would the Disney-Fox deal inspire a new wave of merger memes? Or would internet culture move on to the next big thing?
Expert Opinion
Social media expert and meme enthusiast Karen North weighed in on the topic in an interview with Mashable. “Memes are a reflection of culture, and culture is always changing,” she said. “So while the Disney-Fox merger was certainly a big moment, it’s just one part of a larger story. Memes will continue to evolve, and we’ll see new trends and themes emerge over time.”
Whether or not the internet continues to riff on the Disney-Fox deal, one thing is clear: memes have become an integral part of how we process and understand major news events. And as long as there are mergers, acquisitions, and big business moves, there will always be memes to help us make sense of it all.
