In 2019, Gillette released an advertisement that sparked widespread controversy. The ad, which aimed to address toxic masculinity, featured both positive and negative portrayals of men, but the negative portrayals caused a backlash online. The ad quickly became the subject of a popular meme, with people using the phrase “the best a man can get” to mock the ad and Gillette’s message.

The Birth of the Meme

Within hours of the ad’s release, the internet was flooded with parodies and memes. Some users created their own versions of the ad, featuring negative portrayals of women or other groups. Others used the phrase “the best a man can get” to mock everything from sports teams to political candidates. The meme quickly went viral, with thousands of people sharing their own versions of the ad and riffing on the message.

The Gillette razor meme was a hit with many people, who saw it as a way to poke fun at the ad’s heavy-handed message. Some users praised the meme for highlighting the absurdity of the original ad, while others enjoyed the humor and creativity of the parodies.

The Backlash

Despite its popularity, the Gillette razor meme also attracted criticism from some quarters. Many people saw the meme as a way to attack the original message of the ad, which was widely seen as positive and important. Critics argued that the meme was perpetuating toxic masculinity and undermining the message of the original ad.

Some commentators also noted that the Gillette razor meme was part of a wider trend of online backlash against progressive messages. They argued that the meme was a way for people to express their discomfort with changing social norms and to push back against calls for greater equality and diversity.

The Aftermath

Despite the criticisms, the Gillette razor meme continued to be popular for several weeks after the original ad’s release. However, as with many memes, it eventually faded away as new trends emerged. Today, the Gillette razor meme is largely forgotten, although some people still use the phrase “the best a man can get” to mock the original ad.

Looking back, it’s clear that the Gillette razor meme was a product of its time. The meme reflected the cultural and political tensions of 2019, when debates around toxic masculinity, gender equality, and social justice were at the forefront of public discourse.

Expert Opinion

We spoke to Dr. Sarah Johnson, a social psychologist at the University of California, to get her take on the Gillette razor meme. Dr. Johnson said:

“The Gillette razor meme was an interesting phenomenon because it highlighted the power of satire and humor in shaping public discourse. The meme was a way for people to express their opinions and push back against messages they disagreed with, but it also had the potential to cause harm by perpetuating negative stereotypes and undermining progressive messages.”

Overall, the Gillette razor meme was a fascinating example of how the internet can shape public discourse and influence the way we think about important issues. While the meme may have been controversial, it also sparked important conversations about masculinity, gender, and social justice.
