puzzled

It’s been three years since the “Puzzled Woman” meme took the internet by storm. For those who may not remember, the meme featured a middle-aged woman with a confused expression on her face, surrounded by math equations and symbols. The image quickly became a viral sensation, with people using it to express their own feelings of confusion and bewilderment.

The Origins of the Meme

The original image of the puzzled woman actually came from a stock photo website. It was taken by a photographer named Antonio Guillem, who specializes in creating stock images for marketing and advertising purposes. The photo was titled “Disloyal Man Walking With His Girlfriend and Looking Amazed at Another Seductive Girl,” and it was part of a series of images that Guillem had created to depict infidelity in relationships.

However, it wasn’t until the image was shared on social media that it took on a life of its own. People began cropping the image and adding their own captions, often related to difficult math problems or confusing situations. The meme quickly spread across the internet, with people from all over the world sharing their own versions of the image.

The Impact of the Meme

The “Puzzled Woman” meme had a significant impact on internet culture in 2023. It became one of the most popular memes of the year, with people using it to express a wide range of emotions. Some people used it to express confusion or bewilderment, while others used it to poke fun at difficult math problems or complex situations.

The meme also sparked a number of conversations about the power of stock photography and the ways in which images can be used to convey different meanings. Many people pointed out that the original image was intended to depict infidelity, but it had been repurposed in a way that was completely unrelated to its original context.

The Response from Antonio Guillem

When Antonio Guillem first learned that his stock photo had become a viral meme, he was surprised but also pleased. He recognized that the meme had taken on a life of its own and that people were using it in creative and unexpected ways.

However, he also acknowledged that the meme had been created without his permission and that he had not received any compensation for its use. In an interview with The Guardian, he said, “I have seen the photo being used in many different ways, but I have never received any benefits from it. I think that if someone is making money from my work, I should at least be compensated in some way.”

The Legal Issues Surrounding Memes

The “Puzzled Woman” meme is just one example of the legal issues that can arise when images are used in unexpected ways online. In many cases, the original creators of these images do not receive any compensation for their use, even though they may have put a great deal of time and effort into creating them.

There is also the question of whether or not memes are protected by copyright law. While some people argue that memes fall under the category of “fair use,” others argue that they are a form of copyright infringement. As internet culture continues to evolve, it is likely that we will see more legal battles over the use of memes and other online content.

The Legacy of the Meme

Even though it has been three years since the “Puzzled Woman” meme first went viral, it still holds a special place in internet culture. It has become a part of our collective memory, and it continues to be used in various ways across social media platforms.

Some people argue that the meme has lost its relevance and that it is time to move on to something new. However, others believe that the meme will continue to be a part of internet culture for many years to come.
