It’s been nearly two decades since the release of the movie “American Psycho,” but its impact lives on in unexpected ways. One of those ways is through the rise of American Psycho memes on Reddit. These memes take scenes from the movie and turn them into darkly humorous commentary on everything from politics to pop culture.

The Appeal of American Psycho Memes

So why have American Psycho memes become so popular on Reddit? For one thing, the movie has a dedicated cult following that continues to grow. The film’s dark humor and biting satire of 1980s Wall Street culture have resonated with audiences for years. The movie’s protagonist, Patrick Bateman, has become something of an antihero for many people, and his iconic scenes have been turned into countless memes.

Another reason for the popularity of these memes is the way they allow people to comment on current events with a sense of detachment. Many of the memes take a humorous, exaggerated approach to serious issues, which can be a way for people to cope with difficult subjects or express their frustration with the state of the world.

Examples of American Psycho Memes

One of the most famous American Psycho memes is the “business card” scene, in which Patrick Bateman and his colleagues compare their business cards. This scene has been turned into countless memes that poke fun at everything from politics to pop culture. For example, one popular meme shows different versions of the “Avengers” logo, with a caption reading “New Avengers business cards leaked.”

Another popular meme takes the scene in which Patrick Bateman kills Paul Allen with an axe and replaces it with a more lighthearted context. For example, one meme shows Bateman about to swing his axe at a computer screen with the caption “When your code won’t compile.”

The Controversy Surrounding American Psycho Memes

Not everyone is a fan of American Psycho memes, however. Some people find them tasteless, insensitive, or even offensive. Critics argue that these memes make light of serious issues and trivialize violence.

One Reddit user who goes by the name “BatemanFan69” defends the memes, saying, “It’s all in good fun. We’re not condoning violence or anything like that. We’re just having a laugh at the expense of the absurdity of the world we live in.”

Others have pointed out that the movie itself is controversial and has been accused of promoting violence against women. The memes, they argue, only serve to perpetuate that message.

The Future of American Psycho Memes

As with any trend, it’s hard to say how long American Psycho memes will remain popular on Reddit. Some people predict that the trend will die out as people move on to the next big thing. Others believe that the memes will continue to evolve and adapt to new cultural and political trends.

One thing is for certain, however: American Psycho memes are not going away anytime soon. They have become a part of internet culture and a way for people to express their views on the world in a unique and sometimes controversial way.

What Reddit Users are Saying

“I love American Psycho memes. They’re so dark and twisted, but they make me laugh every time.” – User: DarkHumorEnthusiast

“I think these memes are tasteless and insensitive. We should be treating serious issues with more respect.” – User: SocialJusticeWarrior

Back in 2023, a little-known song called “Hip to Be Square” by Huey Lewis and the News made a surprise comeback thanks to the internet. The song, which was originally released in 1986, gained popularity as the soundtrack to a series of memes featuring the titular character of the 2000 film American Psycho. The memes usually featured a clip of actor Christian Bale’s character Patrick Bateman dancing maniacally to the song, often with humorous captions superimposed over the footage.

The Birth of a Meme

The origins of the American Psycho meme song are somewhat murky. Some say it started with a single tweet featuring the Bateman dance clip and the caption “When you finally finish all your assignments.” Others credit a Reddit post that went viral, or a TikTok video that gained traction on the app. Regardless of its origins, the meme quickly spread across social media platforms, with users creating their own versions of the Bateman dance to different songs and sharing them with their followers.

The Song’s Resurgence

As the American Psycho meme song grew in popularity, so too did interest in the original song by Huey Lewis and the News. Fans of the meme began seeking out the track on streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, and the song’s streams and downloads skyrocketed as a result. The band even saw a bump in concert ticket sales, with fans eager to hear “Hip to Be Square” performed live.

The Backlash

Despite its initial popularity, the American Psycho meme song soon found itself at the center of controversy. Some critics argued that the meme was making light of mental illness, as Patrick Bateman is a character with severe sociopathic tendencies. Others felt that the meme was promoting toxic masculinity, as Bateman is depicted as a wealthy, successful businessman who revels in acts of extreme violence.

The Response

In response to the backlash, some social media users began creating their own versions of the American Psycho meme song that aimed to subvert the original message. These new memes featured Bateman dancing to songs with more socially conscious lyrics, or with captions that called attention to issues like income inequality and climate change. Others defended the meme, arguing that it was simply a lighthearted way to poke fun at an iconic film character.

The Fall of the Meme

Despite the efforts of its defenders, the American Psycho meme song eventually began to lose steam. As with all internet fads, the meme was eventually replaced by newer, fresher content. The song’s streams and downloads tapered off, and Huey Lewis and the News returned to relative obscurity. Today, the American Psycho meme song is remembered as a quirky footnote in internet culture, a brief moment of viral fame for a forgotten 80s pop hit.

The Legacy

Despite its relatively short lifespan, the American Psycho meme song left a lasting impact on internet culture. It showed how a single clip from a movie could inspire a viral trend that spread across the globe in a matter of days. It also demonstrated the power of nostalgia, as fans of the meme rediscovered and celebrated a song that had been largely forgotten for decades. And it highlighted the ongoing debate over the role of humor in social media, and how far is too far when it comes to joking about serious issues.

What do you think of the American Psycho meme song? Did you participate in the trend, or do you find it problematic? Let us know in the comments!
