The PSAT Exam
The Preliminary SAT, or PSAT, is a standardized test designed to prepare high school students for the SAT exam. It tests students’ skills in reading, writing, and math, and is usually taken in the 10th or 11th grade. The PSAT is also used to determine eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
The Memes
As with any major test, Twitter was filled with memes about the PSAT exam. Some of the most popular memes centered around the difficulty of the test, with students joking about how they had no idea what some of the questions were asking. Others poked fun at the weirdly specific questions, such as “What is the probability of drawing a red marble from a bag with 3 red marbles and 2 blue marbles?”
One popular meme featured a picture of Leonardo DiCaprio from “The Wolf of Wall Street,” with the caption “Sell me this pencil,” a reference to a question on the PSAT that asked students to do just that. Another meme showed a picture of SpongeBob SquarePants with the caption “Me trying to find the answer to question 3,” a nod to the difficulty of some of the questions.
Responses to the Memes
The PSAT memes quickly went viral, with students and educators alike joining in on the fun. Some educators even used the memes as a way to engage with their students and make the test seem less intimidating.
One Twitter user wrote, “I’m not sure if these PSAT memes are making me feel better or worse about my score,” while another joked, “If I don’t pass this PSAT, at least I got some good memes out of it.”
The Importance of Humor
While the PSAT exam is no laughing matter, the memes that came out of it are a reminder that humor can be a powerful tool for coping with stress and anxiety. By making light of the test’s difficulty and weirdly specific questions, students were able to relieve some of the pressure and anxiety that comes with taking a major exam.
Humor can also be a way to connect with others and build a sense of community. The PSAT memes brought together students from all over the country who were experiencing the same thing, and gave them a way to bond over their shared experiences.
