Back in the early days of the internet, memes were a simpler affair. From the Dancing Baby to All Your Base Are Belong to Us, these viral sensations were often fueled by bizarre images that spread like wildfire across the web. But as social media took off and the meme economy exploded, new trends emerged. One of the most enduring of these was the Pornstache meme.

What is a Pornstache?
For those unfamiliar with the term, a Pornstache is a particular style of mustache that was popular in the 1970s and 80s. Often associated with sleazy used car salesmen or adult film stars, this facial hair style was characterized by a thick, bushy mustache that covered the top lip.
The Pornstache became a popular target for internet memes in the early 2010s, thanks in part to the rise of social media platforms like Tumblr and Twitter. Users would often create images featuring famous people or fictional characters with exaggerated versions of the mustache, resulting in bizarre and often hilarious mashups.
The Height of the Pornstache Meme
One of the most popular iterations of the Pornstache meme was the Ron Swanson meme. Ron Swanson was a character on the hit NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation, played by actor Nick Offerman. Swanson was known for his love of meat, woodworking, and libertarian politics, as well as his impressive mustache.
As the show gained popularity, so too did the Ron Swanson meme. Fans of the show would create images featuring Swanson with an even more exaggerated version of his mustache, often accompanied by witty captions or quotes from the show.
Responses to the Pornstache Meme
While many people found the Pornstache meme to be funny and harmless, there were others who saw it as problematic. Some argued that it perpetuated harmful stereotypes about men with facial hair, while others felt that it was disrespectful to the actors and celebrities who were being mocked.
One of the most vocal critics of the Pornstache meme was Nick Offerman himself. In a 2014 interview with GQ, Offerman said that he found the meme to be “disrespectful” and “hurtful” to both himself and the character he played.
The Decline of the Pornstache Meme
Despite its initial popularity, the Pornstache meme began to lose steam in the mid-2010s. As with many internet trends, users eventually grew tired of the same old jokes and began to move on to newer memes and fads.
Today, the Pornstache meme is largely a relic of the early days of social media. While it may still pop up from time to time, it is no longer the ubiquitous presence that it once was.
People’s Comments on the Pornstache Meme
For those who were there at the height of the Pornstache meme, it remains a fond memory of a simpler time on the internet. Many users remember the Ron Swanson meme in particular as a source of joy and laughter during a difficult time in their lives.
Others, however, are glad to see the meme fade into obscurity. Some see it as a relic of a more sexist and homophobic era, while others simply find it dated and unfunny.
The Legacy of the Pornstache Meme
While the Pornstache meme may no longer be at the forefront of internet culture, its legacy lives on in the countless other memes and trends that have followed in its wake. From the Tide Pod challenge to the Harlem Shake, internet memes continue to captivate and entertain users around the world.
Whether you loved it or hated it, the Pornstache meme was a cultural touchstone of the early 2010s. While it may have passed into obscurity, its impact on internet culture will not soon be forgotten.
