The Origins of “Y la Posada” Memes

The phrase “Y la Posada” comes from a famous Mexican Christmas tradition called “Las Posadas.” In this tradition, a group of people reenact Mary and Joseph’s search for a place to stay in Bethlehem, going door to door asking for shelter. At the end of the procession, the group gathers for a celebration, or “posada.” The “Y la Posada” meme takes this tradition and turns it into a humorous expression of disappointment or frustration. The meme features a picture of Mary and Joseph knocking on a door, with the caption “Y la posada?” (And the posada?) followed by a witty or sarcastic remark. The first “Y la Posada” meme was created in 2022 by a Mexican Twitter user, and it quickly went viral in the Spanish-speaking world. The meme was then picked up by English-speaking users, and it soon became a global sensation.
