The Rise And Fall Of The Portal Meme Song: A Comprehensive Guide

Played Portal but never done this gaming
Played Portal but never done this gaming from www.reddit.com

Back in the early 2010s, a video game called Portal gained immense popularity for its innovative gameplay and witty humor. But perhaps even more iconic than the game itself was its end credits song, “Still Alive,” sung by GLaDOS, the game’s villainous AI. The song’s catchy melody and sarcastic lyrics quickly became a meme, with countless remixes and covers popping up on the internet.

Fast forward to 2023, and the Portal meme song has largely faded from the collective consciousness. But for a brief period, it was a cornerstone of internet culture. In this article, we’ll take a deep dive into the history of the meme song, explore some of its most famous iterations, and examine why it ultimately fell out of favor.

Origins of the Portal Meme Song

The original version of “Still Alive” was composed by Jonathan Coulton, a musician who had previously gained a following for his humorous, geeky songs. Coulton was approached by Valve, the studio behind Portal, to create a song that would play over the game’s credits. The result was a tongue-in-cheek tune that perfectly encapsulated the game’s irreverent tone.

After the game’s release in 2007, “Still Alive” quickly became a fan favorite. But it wasn’t until a few years later that the song truly entered the realm of meme-dom. In 2010, a YouTube user named Harry101UK created a music video using the Portal 2 trailer and the original “Still Alive” song. The video went viral, racking up millions of views and spawning countless remixes and parodies.

Notable Remixes and Covers

One of the earliest and most popular “Still Alive” remixes was created by a user named “Pogo” in 2011. Pogo took snippets of GLaDOS’s vocals and chopped them up into a bouncy, infectious beat. The resulting song, “Wishery,” was a hit on YouTube and even earned praise from Jonathan Coulton himself.

Another notable remix was “Still Alive (The Remix),” which was created by a user named “The Stig” in 2012. This version of the song features a faster tempo and a more electronic sound, giving it a more modern feel.

Of course, there were also countless covers of the song, ranging from amateur garage band recordings to professional renditions by orchestras and choirs. One particularly impressive cover was performed by the a cappella group Pentatonix, who gave the song their signature harmonies and vocal percussion.

The Decline of the Portal Meme Song

So why did the Portal meme song ultimately fade away? There are a few factors that likely contributed to its decline. For one, the song simply became overplayed. After years of hearing the same remixes and covers over and over again, many people grew tired of the meme.

Additionally, the popularity of Portal itself waned over time. While the game is still beloved by many, it’s no longer at the forefront of the gaming world. As a result, interest in the song naturally decreased as well.

Responses from Fans

Despite its fall from grace, there are still plenty of die-hard fans of the Portal meme song out there. Here are a few comments from people who remember the song fondly:

  • “I still listen to the original ‘Still Alive’ on repeat sometimes. It’s just such a catchy and fun song.” – Sarah, 26
  • “I remember when ‘Wishery’ came out and everyone was obsessed with it. I must have watched the video a hundred times.” – Alex, 30
  • “I think the song has aged really well, actually. It still holds up as a great piece of music, even if the meme has died down.” – Tom, 24

The Legacy of the Portal Meme Song

While it may not be as ubiquitous as it once was, the Portal meme song still holds a special place in internet history. Its catchy melody and clever lyrics made it a standout among video game music, and its enduring popularity speaks to the power of a good meme. Who knows? Maybe in another decade, we’ll see a resurgence of interest in the song. But for now, we can simply enjoy it for what it was: a delightful piece of internet culture.
