On February 14, 2023, Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain faced off in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. The match ended in a 3-1 victory for Real Madrid, but the internet was quick to focus on the memes that emerged from the game rather than the actual result. Here, we take a look at some of the funniest memes that were shared after the match.

The Build-Up

The hype leading up to the match was intense. Both teams had high-profile players and were expected to put on a great show. But it was the memes that really stole the show before the match even started. One fan shared a picture of the Eiffel Tower with the caption “Paris Saint Germain’s new striker” poking fun at the team’s tendency to spend big on players. Another fan shared a picture of Cristiano Ronaldo with the caption “When you realize you’re playing against a team sponsored by Qatar” referencing PSG’s ownership by Qatar Sports Investments.

The Game

During the match, fans on social media were quick to react to every moment. One of the most shared memes was a picture of Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema with the caption “When you realize you’re the only striker on the pitch” referencing PSG’s decision to play without a traditional striker. Another popular meme was a picture of PSG’s Neymar Jr. with the caption “When you see a Real Madrid player in the box” poking fun at Neymar’s tendency to dive.

The Aftermath

After the match, fans continued to share memes about the game. One fan shared a picture of PSG’s Edinson Cavani with the caption “When you realize you left Real Madrid to join PSG” referencing Cavani’s decision to leave Real Madrid’s rivals, Atletico Madrid, for PSG. Another popular meme was a picture of Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos with the caption “When you realize you’re the only player on the pitch with a World Cup medal” referencing Ramos’ success with the Spanish national team in 2010.

The Fan Reactions

Of course, the memes wouldn’t be complete without the reactions of fans. One fan tweeted “Real Madrid may have won the match, but PSG won the meme game” while another fan shared “I can’t stop laughing at these memes, they’re better than the match itself”. Some fans even took the opportunity to create their own memes, with one fan sharing a picture of PSG’s Angel Di Maria with the caption “When you realize you’re playing against your former team and they’re winning” referencing Di Maria’s time at Real Madrid.

Final Thoughts

While the match itself was entertaining, it was the memes that really captured the attention of fans. From poking fun at each team’s players to referencing past events, the memes provided a hilarious way to recap the game. It’s clear that memes have become an integral part of sports culture, and we can’t wait to see what the next big game brings.
