The “roses are red” meme has its roots in a poem that has been around for centuries. The original poem goes like this:

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Sugar is sweet,
And so are you.

Over time, people started to play with the poem, changing the last line to create humorous or absurd rhymes. The first recorded instance of this was in 1590, when Sir Edmund Spenser wrote:

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Sheep’s wool is white,
And so is milk too.
