It’s been a decade since the rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo started to heat up on the football pitch. But the battle between these two football legends has spread beyond the field, and onto the internet, where fans from around the world have been creating memes and trolling each other relentlessly. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the Messi vs Ronaldo memes that have emerged over the years.

The Early Years

Back in 2010, when Messi and Ronaldo were at the peak of their powers, there weren’t many memes pitting them against each other. But as their rivalry grew, so did the number of memes. One of the earliest memes that gained traction was a picture of Messi and Ronaldo facing off, with the caption “Messi vs Ronaldo: Who’s the real king of football?”.

The meme became an instant hit, and fans started sharing it on social media. But it wasn’t long before the meme evolved into something more creative. Soon, fans started creating their own versions of the meme, with hilarious captions and photoshopped images.

The Height of the Rivalry

The rivalry between Messi and Ronaldo reached its peak between 2011 and 2014, when the two players were constantly battling it out for the title of the world’s best footballer. During this time, the Messi vs Ronaldo memes were at their most creative and entertaining.

One of the most popular memes from this era was a picture of Messi and Ronaldo sitting on a bench, with Messi looking sad and Ronaldo looking smug. The caption read “When you realize you’re not the best player in the world anymore”.

Another popular meme was a picture of Messi and Ronaldo staring each other down, with the caption “When you see your ex with someone better than you”. This meme was particularly popular during the World Cup, when fans of different teams would use it to troll each other.

The Post-Rivalry Era

Since Ronaldo moved to Juventus in 2018, the Messi vs Ronaldo memes have become less frequent. But that doesn’t mean they’ve disappeared completely. Fans still create memes pitting the two players against each other, even though they no longer play in the same league.

One of the most popular memes from the post-rivalry era was a picture of Messi and Ronaldo shaking hands, with the caption “When you finally realize that you’re both legends”. This meme was seen as a tribute to the two players, and it was shared by fans from all over the world.

The Fans Speak

We spoke to a few fans of Messi and Ronaldo to get their take on the memes:

“Some of the memes are funny, but others are just mean-spirited. I think we should focus on celebrating the achievements of both Messi and Ronaldo, instead of trying to tear them down.” – James, 32

In 2023, it’s hard to imagine a world without memes. They’ve become a ubiquitous part of internet culture, evolving and mutating at an incredible pace. One of the most enduring memes of the past few years has been the “Messi riéndose” meme, which started off as a simple image macro but quickly became something much more complex and interesting. In this article, we’ll dive into the history of the meme, its impact on popular culture, and why it eventually fell out of favor.

The Birth of a Meme

It all started with a photo of Lionel Messi, the Argentine soccer superstar, laughing on the sidelines during a game. The photo was taken by a photographer named Alexis Cuarezma, who captured the moment during a match between Barcelona and Real Madrid in 2017. The photo quickly went viral, and people began to use it as a template for all sorts of different memes.

At first, the memes were pretty simple. They just featured the photo of Messi laughing, with some text overlaid on top. The text would usually be something humorous or absurd, and the meme would be shared around on social media. But as more and more people started to use the meme, it began to take on a life of its own.

The Evolution of the Meme

As with many memes, the “Messi riéndose” meme started to evolve and mutate over time. People began to add their own twists to the basic formula, creating new and interesting variations on the original meme. Some people started to use the meme to comment on current events or politics, while others used it to make fun of celebrities or public figures.

One of the most interesting things about the “Messi riéndose” meme was its versatility. It could be used in almost any context, and people were constantly coming up with new ways to use it. Some people even started to create elaborate stories and narratives using the meme, turning it into a kind of interactive storytelling tool.

The Impact of the Meme

As the “Messi riéndose” meme grew in popularity, it started to have a real impact on popular culture. People began to recognize the image of Messi laughing, even if they didn’t know anything about soccer or the original context of the photo. The meme was referenced in TV shows, movies, and even in other memes.

But perhaps the most interesting thing about the “Messi riéndose” meme was the way it brought people together. People from all over the world were using the meme, and it became a kind of shared language that could be understood by anyone. People who might not have anything else in common were suddenly united by their love of a silly internet meme.

The Fall of the Meme

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and the “Messi riéndose” meme eventually fell out of favor. It’s hard to say exactly why this happened, but one theory is that people simply got tired of it. After all, the meme had been around for several years by this point, and people were ready for something new.

Another theory is that the meme became too popular for its own good. As more and more people started using it, the meme lost some of its original charm and became diluted. People started to use it in ways that weren’t very funny or interesting, and the meme began to feel played out.

What People Are Saying

So, what do people who were involved with the “Messi riéndose” meme think about it now? We reached out to a few people who were active in the meme community to get their thoughts.

“I think the ‘Messi riéndose’ meme was a really special moment in internet culture,” says Juan Pablo, a meme creator from Argentina. “It was a way for people to connect across borders and cultures, and it was really fun while it lasted.”

“I loved the ‘Messi riéndose’ meme when it first started,” says Maria, a social media influencer from Spain. “But after a while, it started to feel like everyone was using it, and it lost some of its magic. I’m ready for the next big thing.”

“I still use the ‘Messi riéndose’ meme from time to time,” says Ahmed, a meme enthusiast from Egypt. “But I can see why it’s not as popular as it used to be. It had a good run, but all memes eventually die out.”

The Legacy of the Meme

Although the “Messi riéndose” meme may no longer be as popular as it once was, its impact on internet culture will be felt for years to come. It served as a reminder that memes can be more than just silly jokes or inside jokes – they can be a way to bring people together and create shared experiences.
