memelihara

For years, the issue of “haram memelihara anjing” or “forbidden to keep dogs” has been a topic of controversy in Indonesia. While some people see dogs as loyal companions and even consider them as part of their family, others view them as impure and unclean animals that should not be kept as pets.

The debate surrounding this issue has been ongoing, with both sides presenting their arguments and justifications. Those who are against keeping dogs as pets often cite religious reasons, as dogs are considered impure in Islam. They also argue that dogs can be a source of disease and can pose a threat to public safety.

On the other hand, those who are in favor of keeping dogs as pets argue that dogs can provide emotional support and companionship, particularly for those who live alone or suffer from mental health issues. They also argue that dogs can be trained to be well-behaved and pose no threat to public safety.

The Religious Perspective

One of the primary reasons why some Muslims in Indonesia are against keeping dogs as pets is because dogs are considered impure in Islam. This belief is based on several hadiths or sayings of Prophet Muhammad, which state that angels do not enter a house where dogs are kept, and that dogs should not be kept as pets except for hunting, herding, or guarding purposes.

However, some scholars argue that these hadiths should not be taken as absolute prohibitions on keeping dogs as pets. They point out that the hadiths were meant to prevent Muslims from adopting the practices of non-Muslims, who at the time kept dogs as pets and even worshipped them as idols. They also argue that the context of these hadiths should be taken into account, as they were specific to a certain time and place.

The Public Health Perspective

Another argument against keeping dogs as pets is the potential health risks they can pose. Dogs can carry and transmit diseases such as rabies, leptospirosis, and salmonellosis, which can be harmful to humans. They can also cause allergies and asthma in some people, particularly those who are already sensitive to allergens.

However, it is important to note that these risks can be minimized through proper care and hygiene practices. Dogs should be vaccinated against diseases, regularly bathed and groomed, and kept in a clean and sanitary environment. Owners should also be responsible for cleaning up after their dogs and disposing of their waste properly.

The Emotional Support Perspective

Many dog owners argue that their pets provide them with emotional support and companionship, particularly during times of stress or loneliness. Dogs are known for their loyalty and affectionate nature, and can help reduce stress and anxiety levels in their owners.

Some studies have even shown that owning a dog can have positive effects on mental health, such as reducing symptoms of depression and improving overall well-being. However, it is important for owners to remember that owning a dog also comes with responsibilities, such as providing proper care and attention, and ensuring that they do not pose a threat to public safety.

The Response from the Public

The issue of “haram memelihara anjing” has sparked heated debates and discussions among the public, with both sides presenting their arguments and justifications. Some people believe that keeping dogs as pets is a personal choice, and that others should respect their decision. Others argue that the potential risks and religious concerns associated with keeping dogs as pets should be taken into account.

Many animal welfare organizations have also weighed in on this issue, advocating for responsible pet ownership and proper care of animals. They argue that dogs, like any other animal, deserve to be treated with compassion and respect, and that pet ownership should not be taken lightly.

Conclusion

The issue of “haram memelihara anjing” is a complex and controversial one, with arguments and justifications on both sides. While dogs can provide emotional support and companionship to their owners, they can also pose potential health risks and raise religious concerns. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to make an informed decision about whether or not to keep a dog as a pet, while also being responsible for their care and well-being.
